    Paid Internship

    Description: We are looking for a qualified graduate intern to join our Practical Action Consulting (PAC) team.

    The intern should be prepared to work in a fast paced team environment and will finish the internship having gained broad experience in various aspects of finance, accounting, administrative support and exposure to project management and development work.

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Working with the PAC team and the finance department on making out payments for PAC contracts as and when required, preparing and tracking invoices for PAC assignments, reviewing PAC financial reports (budget vs expenditure), liaising with finance on financial reporting aspects for PAC assignments, assisting the PAC team in requesting for work floats, assisting the PAC team in accounting and reconciling expenses for work floats taken, raising requisitions and sourcing for quotations from service providers, preparing account accruals whenever necessary and submitting the PAC timesheets to Finance.
    • Assist in the preparation and submission of Expression of Interest (EOIs), concepts and proposals. This will also include editing and formatting of consultant CVs and PAC project references.
    • Supporting the preparation of PR materials i.e. case studies, leaflets, capability statements etc. as well as implementation of PR events.
    • Liaise with the PAC team and PA’s Communications Officer to develop content for PAC’s website.
    • Liaise with Practical Action’s IT department to upload all PAC project documents onto Share Point.
    • Upload PAC consultant CVs to the PAC CVs database.
    • Conduct desktop research on prospective donors and clients including newspapers and magazines to track opportunities.
    • Assist the team in maintaining an up to date project pipeline and report.
    • Participate in team meetings as and when required.
    • Undertake any other Practical Action relevant duties assigned from time to time by the line manager.

    Project Manager, Renewable Energy for Refugees (RE4R)

    Description: Under the overall supervision and guidance of the Regional Director, Practical Action Eastern Africa with a matrix relation to the UK Energy Project

    Manager, the project manager will be responsible for managing and delivering a high profile humanitarian energy access project in Rwanda, working with a team of local and international experts.

     

    Being the primary lead for the Practical Action project in Rwanda, the post holder will also be expected to take on the a leadership role  for the country’s program portfolio specifically focusing on partnership building, compliance and new business development.

    Among others, the key duties and responsibilities include:

    • Leadership of Practical Action’s Rwanda Country presence including maintaining relations with government, donors and other key stakeholders in Rwanda.
    • Responsible for all aspects of project delivery, including managing the assessment and start-up phases and analysis, planning, budgets and contract management, client relationships and partner co-ordination.
    • Serve as the budget holder for Rwanda programs; where applicable manage and support delegated sub-budget holders for individual projects and grants.
    • Oversee the setup of country office operations in Rwanda including lease arrangements, acquisition of office equipment and fixed assets.
    • Ensure appropriate staffing within program operations, including field office staff.
    • Manage program operations team; define expectations, provide leadership and technical support as needed, and evaluate direct reports regularly.

    The prospective candidate should possess:

    • A  Master’s degree in a relevant field such as in international development, project management, business administration or related fields.
    • At least 10 years relevant experience, including experience in developing countries. Experience in Rwanda is highly desirable.
    • Advanced project management skills, including finance and contract management, client and stakeholder management, managing inputs from team members, consultants and partners, capability to use project management tools to deliver projects to time and budget at the satisfaction of the donor/client.
    • Experience of managing large budgets, over $500,000 on multi-year complex projects.
    • Proven organizational skills
    • Excellent communication and influencing skills across cultures, including proven technical writing and presentation/communication skills.
    • Fluency in written and spoken English is essential.  Fluency in French is highly desirable.

    Water Sanitation Hygiene (WASH) and Waste Management Manager

    Description: Under the overall supervision and guidance of the Regional Director, Practical Action Eastern Africa, the WASH and Waste Management Manager will be responsible for the oversight and quality delivery of the work of the Urban WASH teams in the region and working with other key stakeholders in the UK to ensure Practical Action maximises synergies to grow the programmes.

    Among others, the key duties and responsibilities include:

    • Contribute to the development of Practical Action’s regional strategic plans to work with poor and marginalised people and their organisations to increase their access to information and services and to build their capacity to improve their lives.
    • Prepare specific strategic plans for Practical Action’s Urban WASH programs ensuring that the plans conform to Practical Action Eastern Africa’s strategic direction, policy and implementation strategies.
    • Proactively develop ideas, concepts and  project proposals with Urban WASH staff for fundraising activities as well as  market them to relevant donors
    • Lead and coordinate the implementation of specific Urban Wash projects through planning, development, implementation and evaluation and ensure that findings guide the continued successful implementation of projects and inform the development of further initiatives
    • Line manage and build a high performing WASH team that has clear objectives, metrics, is continuously developed and rewarded both as individuals and as a team.

    The prospective candidate should possess:

    • At least a Master’s Degree with a first degree in a WASH relevant field such as Engineering, Public Health or Geology.
    • At least seven (7) years’ work experience in development or a relevant technical field, and minimum of three to five years of senior management experience in a non-profit organization. Experience of delivering innovative water, sanitation, hygiene & waste management within the NGO or private sector is highly desirable.
    • Good knowledge and understanding of development issues affecting the availability of clean water, reliable sanitation and waste management in Kenya and the region.
    • Working experience with communities and partner organisations.
    • Excellent analytical and conceptual thinking skills
    • Excellent writing skills and proven track record of writing successful funding proposals

    Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Manager

    Description: Under the overall supervision and guidance of the Regional Director, Practical Action Eastern Africa, the DRR Manager will be responsible for the oversight and quality delivery of the work of the DRR teams in the region and working with other key stakeholders in the UK to ensure Practical Action maximises synergies to grow the programmes.

    Among others, the key duties and responsibilities include:

    • Contribute to the development of Practical Action’s regional strategic plans to work with poor and marginalised people to increase their access to information and services and to build their capacity to improve their lives.
    • Prepare specific strategic plans for Practical Action’s DRR programs ensuring that the plans conform to Practical Action Eastern Africa’s strategic direction, policy and implementation strategies.
    • Proactively develop ideas, concepts and  project proposals with thematic staff for fundraising activities as well as  market them to relevant donors
    • Lead and coordinate the implementation of specific DRR projects through planning, development, implementation and evaluation and ensure that findings guide the continued successful implementation of projects and inform the development of further initiatives
    • Ensure partnerships are carefully developed, properly managed and their capacities built to maximise project impact and sustainability
    • Ensure the effective and timely monitoring of project expenditure against approved budgets.  Using the monthly budget holder reports, ensure timely corrective action on under or over spends.
    • Line manage and build a high performing DRR team that has clear objectives, metrics, is continuously developed and rewarded both as individuals and as a team.

    The prospective candidate should possess:

    • A Master degree in DRR relevant field, preferably on rural development and agriculture. A first degree in a relevant field.  Further specialization on climate change adaptation and/or disaster risk reduction are desired.
    • At least 7 years proven experience of managing development program/projects related to disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation, integration of climate in rural development and related domains.
    • Technical knowledge on designing and managing disaster risk reduction initiatives, Community Based Disaster Risk Management, participatory capacity vulnerability analysis, and climate change adaptation (CCA) projects.
    • Working experiences of integrating DRR/CCA into livelihood and other development programs.
    • Practical experiences on developing and conducting DRR/CCA related training
