    Post-Doctoral Fellow-Diagnostic Assays

    Job description

    Responsibilities

    • To source or develop and establish at ILRI the most appropriate assays for screening of human and animal samples for the targeted zoonotic diseases.
    • To supervise the performance of the assays and interpret the results
    • To transfer the assays to suitable high-throughput and penside formats, and validate the performance of the new assays
    • Contribute to resource mobilization and capacity building
    • Interact with other members of the group
    • Publish results as peer-reviewed articles

    Requirements

    • PhD in Medical, Veterinary or Biological Sciences
    • Requisite and relevant publication record
    • 2 to 5 years’ experience in relevant techniques in the development and performance of serological and nucleic acid–based diagnostic assays

    Post location: The research work will be undertaken in ILRI’s main laboratories in Nairobi and in the field laboratory in Busia, Kenya.

    Position level: Post-doctoral level.

    Duration: 3 years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and continued funding.

    Research Quality Support Specialist

    Job description

    The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit Research Quality Support Specialist to Support research teams to develop research in protocol format and documentation for specific and cross-cutting activities.

    ILRI works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centres dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa. www.ilri.org

    The position

    The Livestock CRP led by ILRI is a vehicle for implementing a large part of the ILRI AR4D agenda to achieve its purpose as described above. To strengthen the rigor of its research activities, the Livestock CRP will be supporting its research teams in ensuring their research meets requirements in terms of the design, research compliance, and evaluation and reporting of results. In addition, the CRP will support learning across teams with inputs to common tools and methodologies.

    Key responsibilities

    • Supporting research teams to develop research in protocol format and documentation for specific and cross-cutting activities; maintaining these in a database of CRP research protocols
    • Monitoring research protocols and activities for quality research methods and compliance with evolving research polices standards
    • Supporting research teams to enhance consistency in research design and data collection tools and methods used across sites and teams
    • Capacity building and supporting flagship and country research teams in developing protocols and data management; archiving and open-access requirements
    • Contribute to the analysis and reporting of research results, including journal publications.

    Requirements

    • MSc Degree in relevant Social Sciences or Applied Statistics, with formal training in Research Methods and at least 3years relevant experience or BSc with at least 6years relevant experience.
    • Substantial experience supporting research design and implementation in an agricultural research for development context
    • Fluent in English, with French or Spanish an advantage
    • Excellent writing skills
    • Proficiency in the analysis of both quantitative and qualitative data with substantial experience using at least one statistical analysis software (R,
    • STATA, SPSS, NVivo and/or GenStat).

    Terms of appointment

    This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position based at ILRI’s Nairobi campus. It is open to Kenyan nationals only. The position is on a 3-year contract, renewable subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding.

    Job level

    This position is job level 2D, ILRI offers a competitive salary and benefits package which includes; pension, medical and other insurances for ILRI’s Nationally Recruited Staff.
