In 2013, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) through the FUNZOKenya project, the predecessor to the HRH Kenya Mechanism, in partnership with the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB), the Ministry of Health (MOH) and the private sector established the Afya Elimu Fund (AEF), to provide low interest (4%) loans to prospective healthcare trainees in mid-level medical training institutions.
The AEF initiative targets bright and, financially needy students and, those from underserved regions of Kenya and, operates on a revolving fund basis. The ultimate objective is to increase the availability of skilled mid-level healthcare workers that are responsive to the country’s disease burden, more so, in HIV/AIDS and other priority health needs.
