Reporting to the Chief innovation Officer we are looking for a strong leader responsible for developing new solutions relevant to Safaricom’s customers. Our ideal candidate is an engineering leader with hands-on technology expert with at least 10-15 years of experience in entrepreneurial and corporate environments and who has a proven record of software engineering and data science excellence in addition to managerial skills. The successful candidate should have deep experience in a wide range of technologies, has worked in international environments and is familiar with the most current trends in tech. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to setup a new team consisting of software engineers and data scientists and will lead by example, develop technical capacity and create an inclusive team empowered to take big risks.

Job Responsibilities

• Provide technical vision and strategy for Safaricom’s innovation roadmap;

• Manage and grow a team of software engineers; work closely with other engineering teams to reuse and understand existing frameworks;

• Drive technical projects and provide leadership; take responsibility for the overall planning, execution and success of technical projects;

• Partner closely with Product Management to create, drive and deliver innovative, compelling and user-friendly products;

• Build in-house capacity through hands-on mentorship and coaching and
• Develop tech-centered partnerships with local and global startups, universities and enterprises.

Job Requirements

• Experience developing complex industrial strength software systems

• Hands-on familiarity with data science concepts

• Demonstrated track record of technical innovation and leading large engineering teams

• Ability to drive strategy while also having the capability to provide detailed technical guidance to the team, enabling them to execute more effectively and deliver products on time and within budget.

• A passion for technology and technical depth to uncover root causes of complex technical problems and provide guidance on solving them.

• Ability to recruit and develop top technical talent

• Ability to build a high performance team

• 10-15 years of work experience including university, with at least 5 years of proven track record of leadership roles ideally in the entrepreneurial space

• International experience

• Distinct analytical and systematic thinking.

• Strong experience in leading and developing technology.
