Reporting to the Head of Engineering we are looking for individuals with strong software engineering skills, are passionate about developing industrial strength software solutions and have a track record that proves their skills. We are not particular about the programming languages you have mastered, but interested in individuals, who understand programming and strive towards developing great products. We want to hire a team of software engineers, who take pride in what they build, who are self-motivated to constantly improve their skills and who will bring a new perspective towards developing outstanding products. In addition we expect our software engineering team to develop their own ideas and create viable solutions.

Job Responsibilities

• Develop software products;

• Work in a larger engineering team tasked to develop new products for Safaricom;

• Create new ideas and demonstrate them in code;
• Work with product managers and external parties in a team;
• Ensure delivery timelines.

Job Requirements

• Proficient in various programming languages and frameworks, such as C, C++, Java, Ruby, Python and Django, Ruby on Rails, etc.

• Android or iOS experience

• Understanding of API design and core software design techniques

• Technical understanding of both front-end and backend development

• BS or MS in computer science or equivalent practical experience

• At least 2-3 years of coding experience in a non-university setting

• Experience with mobile app development.

As a senior software engineer, you should have the ability to lead a team of more junior team members and provide technical implementation guidance.

Reporting to the Chief innovation Officer we are looking for a strong leader responsible for developing new solutions relevant to Safaricom’s customers. Our ideal candidate is an engineering leader with hands-on technology expert with at least 10-15 years of experience in entrepreneurial and corporate environments and who has a proven record of software engineering and data science excellence in addition to managerial skills. The successful candidate should have deep experience in a wide range of technologies, has worked in international environments and is familiar with the most current trends in tech. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to setup a new team consisting of software engineers and data scientists and will lead by example, develop technical capacity and create an inclusive team empowered to take big risks.

Job Responsibilities

• Provide technical vision and strategy for Safaricom’s innovation roadmap;

• Manage and grow a team of software engineers; work closely with other engineering teams to reuse and understand existing frameworks;

• Drive technical projects and provide leadership; take responsibility for the overall planning, execution and success of technical projects;

• Partner closely with Product Management to create, drive and deliver innovative, compelling and user-friendly products;

• Build in-house capacity through hands-on mentorship and coaching and

Our ideal candidate is a creative leader with an understanding of our regional market, a passion and track record for building usable products and a solid understanding of the transformative potential of technology. The role holder should have deep expertise in at least one particular industry, such as financial sector, agriculture, education or any other related field. We are looking for a hands-on product manager with at least 10-15 years of experience in entrepreneurial and corporate environments, who has successfully demonstrated the ability to develop innovative products. They should be a collaborative person, who works well with engineering teams and have strong management skills. They should also be able to take products from conception to deployment and should be well versed in doing so in iterative and agile ways. The role holder should have worked in international environments and are familiar with current trends in tech. They should set the bar for developing a high performance product management team and bring new products into both local and global markets.

Job Responsibilities

• Provide vision and strategy for Safaricom’s innovation roadmap from a product perspective;

• Own the creation, execution and successful delivery of the Innovation Product Strategy, which includes managing the full product lifecycle;

• Understand and analyze user needs, and conduct research on markets and competitors;

• Build and manage a product roadmap to support Safaricom’s goals and strategies;

• Initiate and prioritize projects within our engineering team, track product development and develop product launch plans;

• Engage closely with the head of engineering to help determine the best technical implementation methods and reasonable execution schedules;
• Work closely with engineering to define the roadmap for the product and take it forward and
• Develop and coach a team of product managers.
