    Regional Communications and Advocacy Coordinator

    Purpose

    The needs for strengthened internal and external communication and information sharing as well as dedicated advocacy capacity have become increasingly imminent with the rapid growth of DRCs organizational activities throughout the region. The production of official publications, press releases, and other information material are among ongoing tasks and more initiatives are expected to be launched. The Regional communications and advocacy Coordinator will be involved in work related to policy influence, research, capacity building, developing campaigns and working with other agencies in joint advocacy and campaign initiatives related to forced displacement, as well as dissemination of publications and other practical tasks.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Document the work of DRC. The Regional communications and advocacy (RCA) Coordinator will document the work of DRC and DDG by updating website descriptions for the Regional and Country offices, researching and drafting of articles and fact sheets for various DRC and DDG publications and platforms, and developing human interest stories for use on DRC and DDG communications platforms.
    • Produce various publications and advocacy briefs/material. The Communications and advocacy Coordinator will produce publications such as brochures, fact sheets banners, merchandise, media ads and other visibility products.
    • Function as the regional communications and advocacy focal point. The Communications and advocacy Coordinator will be the focal point in the region, ensuring productive and efficient two-way communication with the global Press and Communications Department in Copenhagen, Denmark and relevant staff in each Country Office throughout the region. This entails keeping up-to-date on all DRC and DDG programs in the East Africa and Yemen region in order to identify milestones, and gather success stories and photographs. Furthermore, the RCA Coordinator will work closely with the SMT and CDs to ensure that senior staff and management are adequately prepared for high level meetings, campaign etc.
    • Quality assure products. The RCA Coordinator will quality assure products according to DRC’s brand manual in terms of layout, design and writing of various publications and visibility materials from the country offices, such as reports, educational material, banners, etc.
    • Field Visits. The RCA will conduct field visits to collect both written and visual documentation of DRC’s and DDG’s work in the form of photography, videos, and slideshows as well as facilitate visits from journalists with the relevant field offices when necessary.
    • Assist in the planning and implementation of the regional advocacy strategies. The RCA will assist in the planning and implementation of country and regional advocacy and communication strategies.
    • Representation in meetings. The RCA will represent DRC and DDG in various communication and advocacy related meetings, working groups and consortiums to ensure DRC and DDG key messaging and position is incorporated into joint advocacy initiatives or messaging.
    • Other ad-hoc tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

    Reporting Arrangements: The Regional Communications and Advocacy Coordinator will report to the DRC Deputy Regional Director.

    Qualifications & Experience

    Essential:

    • Masters’ degree in Communications, Journalism/Graphic design, Political Science
    • At least three years’ experience in a similar role with INGO
    • Experience in writing of journalistic products – articles, case stories, press releases
    • Experience with layout and graphic design
    • Proven experience with humanitarian advocacy work
    • Proactive self-starter and able to work with minimum supervision.
    • Flexible, enthusiastic and willingness to learn from others.
    • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
    • An understanding of humanitarian issues in the East Africa and Yemen region
    • Willingness to travel to programme locations in insecure environments throughout East Africa and Yemen region

    Conditions

    Availability: Immediately

    Duty Station: Nairobi

    Contract: 4 months with possibility of extension. National terms and conditions apply in accordance with the Danish Refugee Council’s Terms of Employment for National staff.
