    Knowledge Attitudes and Practices (KAP) Survey Intern for the Community Pandemic Preparedness Programme (CP3)

    This program builds on existing tools and actions being taken by Red Cross members but also external partners. A number of activities will occur within the program focused on three workstreams: Community Preparedness, National Society Preparedness and Private Sector and Key Stakeholders Engagement.

    Job Purpose

    Evidence generation is an important focus across the program and is imbedded through baseline, close monitoring, and evaluation. At the outset a detailed baseline study is being designed, including a mixed-methods knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) study. The CP3 KAP Intern will work with the CP3 team in the Africa Region, to develop a KAP question guide and survey methodology investigating the baseline state of community epidemic and pandemic preparedness. The intern will pilot the survey in one or two countries that are implementing CP3, and develop the tools which can be applied in the other program countries. The intern will also be responsible for data compilation and analysis for the 8 countries who are part of the program.

    The CP3 KAP intern will be supported to develop their skills and knowledge in questionnaire development, survey design and primary data collection in a real-world setting, and gain knowledge of the suites of community epidemic and pandemic preparedness complexities. They will benefit from the support of public health experts in the regional and global CP3 teams.

    Job Duties and Responsibilities

    Develop a qualitative and quantitative questionnaire and survey methodology looking at community epidemic and pandemic preparedness variables. This will include:

    • Desk review of existing IFRC and CP3 documents, including M&E frameworks to pull out key areas of focus for KAP survey.
    • Develop KAP survey methodology, including sampling methodology with input from academic supervisor and IFRC.
    • Develop KAP survey questionnaire and key informant questionnaire with input and guidance from IFRC.

    Develop toolkit for training of in-country KAP survey teams and recommendations on how to operationalize a CP3 KAP training package. This will include:

    • Creating training tools linked to the KAP survey (related to sampling and survey implementation in the field)
    • Developing training modules for team leaders to use when training survey teams
    • Create a teaching module on accurate data entry and data verification which is to be carried out by team leaders at the country level.

    Put in place a system for data collection, analysis, and reporting. This includes:

    • Creating a central database for KAP data for all 8 countries – in order to compare baseline and endline results, and between countries
    • All training tools for data entry that will be needed by in-country staff
    • Analysis of baseline data
    • Final report on baseline KAP results

    Any other duties as appropriate and needed by the team.

    Education

    Required:

    University degree in a relevant area in process (i.e. public health, epidemiology) with academic supervision

    Experience

    Required:

    • Experience of working in an office environment
    • Relevant experience working or interning with a humanitarian organization (i.e. United Nations or NGOs)
    • Experience of organising and helping to deliver training courses

    Preferred:

    Experience working with Red Cross/Red Crescent National Societies

    Knowledge, skills and languages

    Required:

    • Knowledge of survey methodologies
    • Knowledge of communicable diseases
    • Data analysis skills in both qualitative and quantitative methods
    • Good understanding of humanitarian or development sector
    • Able to work on own initiative and solve problems
    • Good interpersonal and communication skills
    • Excellent verbal and written skills
    • Willing to travel to support a field operation (if applicable)
    • Self-supporting in computers (Windows, spreadsheets, word-processing)
    • Fluently spoken and written English
