In South Sudan, working through partners we have trained 189 frontline Local Service Providers (Community Animal Health Workers, government vets, livestock extension officers and farriers) on equine healthcare, and subsidised their group-managed clinics with veterinary supplies on a recovery basis, enabling them to offer healthcare extension services to 8,030 equines annually.

    Geographic Information System Intern

    Key Responsibilities

    • The main responsibility of the intern will be to support BEA in developing and populating a standardized GIS database. The position will comprise of the following tasks and responsibilities:
    • GIS maintenance and Analysis
    • Supporting fieldwork data collection activities using GPS.
    • Perform data entry and validation to ensure comprehensive and complete data is gathered about the BEA project activities.
    • Spatial data digitization, geo-referencing and integration of various data sources into the GIS geodatabase.
    • Analyzing spatial data using ArcGIS mapping software.
    • Designing several standardized digital maps showing the spatial distribution of various kinds of data for the use under the BEA project.
    • Support in creating "shapefiles" to merge topographical data with external data by layering external data over a topographical map.
    • Maintains GIS databases and ensures that these databases are up to date and accurate.
    • Support the consultant in populating and designing Webmap applications.
    • Produce reports on spatial data utilizing data visualizations.
    • Assist in generating Animations using ArcGIS
    • Conduct staff capacity building on GIS technical areas alongside any subject mater consultant
    • Support to departmental initiatives
    • Supporting fieldwork
    • Maintain a photo, video and news item portal
    • Participate in events by maintaining an attendance register and a visitor’s log
    • Maintaining a spreadsheet of Brooke contacts
    • Assist with sourcing and organizing information for reporting
    • Support in the collection of content for publicity and visibility of the organization
    • Support in managing and maintaining communications contents/supporter contact database in accordance with established procedures, to ensure swift and easy access as required.

    Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • The applicants must possess a Bachelor’s degree in GIS or closely associated field.

    The successful applicant should also;

    • Be experienced with the use of ArcGIS software, GPS mapping tools and demonstrate some experience with mapmaking.
    • Demonstrates a keen understanding and interpreting of spatial data.
    • Shows the ability to enter data quickly, correctly and efficiently.
    • Understands how to convert data from different sources such as maps into digital formats.
    • Understands how to create and edit metadata.
    • Demonstrates a vast knowledge of cartography.
    • Have an analytical mindset and good quantitative skill.
    • Excellent interpersonal, communications and data analysis skills
    • Excellent verbal communication and good interpersonal skills.

    The following will be an added advantage

    • Proficiency with database programming languages such as SQL, or Python will be an added advantage.
    • Proficiency with front-end design languages such as HTML, JavaScript and various mapping languages.
