    Child Protection Specialist (PSEA & GBViE), P-4, Temporary Appointment (364 days), Nairobi, Kenya, ESARO

    How can you make a difference?

    The purpose of this temporary position is to continue strengthening UNICEF's work on prevention and response to sexual exploitation and abuse and Gender-based Violence in Emergency, and advance UNICEF’ strategic vision to strengthen inter-agency mechanisms to deliver results for children in humanitarian settings in the Eastern and Southern Africa Region.

    • Strengthen country offices capacities to provide access to safe and child sensitive reporting channels, including within community-based complaint mechanisms; access to victims centred assistance; and to support cases investigation.
    • Contribute to the development, implementation and rolling out dissemination of global and regional guidance and strategies of specific relevance, including on PSEA, Gender Based Violence in Emergencies, Violence against Children. the Centrality of Protection, 
    • , Child Safeguarding and Accountability to Affected Populations.
    • Support implementation COs PSEA inter-agency initiatives, including the setting-up of in-country PSEA Networks.
    • Support the design of GBViE programmes which are consistent UNICEF’s policies and guidelines.
    • Support documentation of best PSEA and GBViE practices and lessons learnt for onwards dissemination across the Region. 
    • Act as a liaison with HQ and maintain close relationship with PSEA and GBViE focal points in WCARO and MENARO.
    • Advise on any PSEA-related issues that require immediate action and advocacy.
    • Keep management updated on PSEA and GBViE developments and make appropriate recommendations on enhancing prevention and response strategies.
    • Participate in and actively represent ESAR in PSEA and GBViE forums and coordination meetings, as relevant.
    • Contribute to resources mobilization activities, draft reports, project proposals, ToRs, advocacy materials and other relevant documents, as required.
    • Support other activities related to child protection and integrated initiatives, as required by the supervisor.

    To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

    • An advanced university degree (Master’s or higher) preferably in social sciences, social work, political science, law or other relevant fields.
    • A minimum of 8 years of relevant professional experience in working in emergency settings on children’s and women’s rights and violence prevention and response, in particular gender-based violence in emergencies; and on child protection.
    • Knowledge of current PSEA developments and activities at UNCT and HCT level and its partners.
    • Proven success in developing and facilitating training and capacity-building activities on PSEA and GBViE
    • Experience in community engagement and development of community-based complaints and feedback mechanisms.
    • Proven research skills and demonstrated expertise in analysis and development of technical papers, as well as programmatic guidance related to violence against children and women, in particular sexual violence, gender and child protection.
    • Experience working in acute emergency settings.
    • Excellent communication, facilitation and interpersonal skills.
    • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.
