    Critical Care Specialist

    REF: TNH/HRD/CCS/07/21

    Reporting to Team Leader – Critical Care, the successful candidate will be responsible for reviewing Critical Care patients to offer supportive and curative services in line with established protocols and the hospital’s patient care objectives.

    ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    1. Carry out patient assessment, treatment and stabilization and other specialized procedures in line with established protocols.
    2. Structure and Carry out specialised training of medical officers, nurses, senior registrars and nursing students to impart knowledge and improve patient care.
    3. Participate in root cause analysis committees in the event of incidences, complaints and/or poor clinical outcomes to ensure continuous improvement in patient care.
    4. Participate in continuous medical evaluations to sharpen medical knowledge and skills in area of specialization.
    5. Assist private consultants to carry out medical procedures on private patients to ensure optimal patient care.
    6. Develop and continuously review protocols in applicable specialty area to enhance clinical management.
    7. Design and Participate in research activities in applicable specialty area in line with set objectives.
    8. Mentor medical officers in clinical procedures to impart knowledge and improve patient care.
    9. Carry out weekly major ward rounds for applicable specialty area patients as applicable.
    10. Sign off senior registrars and prepare related recommendation letters to the Medical Practitioners and Dentist Council in fulfilment of their specialist recognition requirements.
    11. Responsible for setting, monitoring, and evaluating key performance indicators for the team.
    12. In liaison with the Director, Medical Services & Research, prepare departmental annual plans that are aligned to the Hospital’s strategic plan.
    13. Act as a team leader on a rotational basis for the applicable specialty area.
    14. Uphold high levels of patient confidentiality and work ethic in line with applicable code of conduct and hospital objectives; and
    15. Design and actualise continuous medical education for all cadre of ICU staff
    16. Be able to participate in the hospital general ICU rota
    17. Ability to work well in a multidisciplinary environment including attending and participating in multidisciplinary clinical meetings Tumor Board and Mortality meetings etc.
    18. Play an active role in the management and organization of the ICU department and participate in teaching, researching and audit.
    19. Have the ability to lead when appropriate and work independently with no or little supervision.
    20. Show evidence of personal development through publications and research in the field of ICU.
    21. Any other responsibilities that may be assigned to the job holder by the supervisor from time to time.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

    • Master of Medicine degree in Anaesthesia and Critical Care or internal medicine from a recognized institution: a fellowship will be an added advantage.
    • Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery degree from a recognized institution.
    • Must be registered by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Council and hold a valid practicing license.
    • Advanced Trauma Life Support training.
    • Advanced Life Support training
    • Minimum of 2 years practicing experience in anaesthesia or Critical Care Unit

    • Ability to carry out phlebotomy, cannulation, resuscitation, intubation, exchange transfusion & UBC among other medical procedures
    • Ability to review and manage patients
    • Knowledge and ability to classify diseases
    • Knowledge of pregnancy related condition, contraceptives, minor procedures & surgeries e.g. C section
    • Ability to conduct normal deliveries and assisted deliveries including stitching
