JOB PURPOSE:
The Data Scientist supports SAFIC’s research and innovation agenda by developing analytical models, performing advanced data analyses, and generating insights that inform policy, investment, and agribusiness decision-making. This role contributes to the design and deployment of data-driven solutions that enhance productivity, sustainability, and innovation within Africa’s agri-food systems.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Data Analysis and Modeling
- Develop, validate and implement machine learning and statistical models for structured and unstructured data.
- Analyze large and complex datasets to identify trends, patterns, and predictive insights.
- Refine and optimize models to improve accuracy, reliability, and scalability.
- Apply appropriate methodologies to address sector-specific challenges, particularly in agriculture.
Policy and Strategy Support
- Support data analytics projects that generate evidence for policymaking and business decision-making.
- Interpret analytical results and provide clear, data-driven recommendations.
- Align analytical outputs with the needs of policymakers, researchers, and private sector stakeholders.
Stakeholder Engagement and Coordination
- Collaborate with government agencies, research institutions, and industry partners on data initiatives.
- Support co-creation of analytics solutions that respond to real-world agricultural data challenges.
- Communicate technical concepts effectively to non-technical stakeholders.
Digital Solutions and Analytics Tools
- Contributes to the design and development of interactive dashboards and digital analytics tools.
- Ensure usability, clarity and relevance of data visualizations for diverse audiences.
- Support the deployment and continuous improvement of analytics platforms.
Research Outputs and Dissemination
- Develop clear visualizations and summaries to communicate insights to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Contribute to knowledge products and publications aligned with organizational objectives.
Data Governance, Quality and Ethics
- Adhere to data governance frameworks and best practices in data management.
- Apply ethical AI principles, ensuring transparency, fairness, and accountability in models.
- Maintain data integrity, security and compliance with relevant standards and policies.
Analytics Excellence and Innovation
- Work closely with the Principal Lead Data Scientist to refine analytical methodologies.
- Support performance evaluation and scaling of analytics solutions.
- Contribute to knowledge sharing, documentation, and continuous improvement within the team.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
The post holder will be required to have and demonstrate evidence of the following qualifications, attributes, and skills:
- Master’s Degree in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, AI, Agricultural Informatics, or a related field.
- 3+ years of experience in data science, analytics, or applied research. Experience working
- with agricultural, environmental, economic, or geospatial datasets is an added advantage.
- Strong expertise in machine learning, predictive analytics, and data modelling.
- Proficiency in Python, R, SQL, and data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau).
- Demonstrated ability to analyse large datasets and derive actionable insights.
Key Competencies and Skills:
- Solid technical understanding of data science methodologies and AI/ML techniques.
- Ability to translate analytical outputs into clear, user-friendly insights.
- Strong problem-solving skills and analytical thinking.
- Effective collaboration skills and ability to work with multidisciplinary teams.
