    Deputy Head Pastoral

    Summary of Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

    • This list is a guide to the responsibilities, but it is not exhaustive as the successful candidate will need to be flexible and able to adapt to the changing needs of the school. There is some scope to vary the responsibilities to suit the experience and interests of the successful candidate.

    To deputise for the Principal in his absence

     Leadership Roles (responsible to the Principal):

    Pastoral

    • Be responsible for the pastoral oversight of the Senior School and of the discipline, behaviour and rewards policies and procedures
    • Be responsible for the co-ordination and development of pastoral events
    • To manage and develop the form tutors and as the school grows, the Heads of Year
    • To be the Designated Safeguarding Lead

    Strategic, with responsibilities including:

    • To assist with the review and application of the School Development Plan
    • To review and follow up the results of the staff appraisals
    • To oversee the forward planning of the school calendar
    • To develop the extra-curricular programme
    • To attend regular SLT meetings
    • To attend meetings of Working Groups and other relevant committees
    • To oversee the liaison between the Prep and Senior School

    Staff, with responsibilities including:

    • To organise the daily staff cover requirements
    • To organise the appraisal programme for all staff
    • To oversee the arrangements for the induction of all new staff
    • To organise the staff INSET and ongoing CPD programme
    • Oversee the PSHE programme
    • Management roles (responsible to the Principal):

    Responsibilities include:

    • To oversee requests for staff absence
    • To make arrangements for exam invigilation
    • To make arrangements for public events for example School Dramatic and Musical Performances, Celebration and Prize Giving etc.
    • To coordinate student induction events and parent information evenings
    • To make arrangements for assemblies
    • To organise staff/student duties (including lunch arrangements)
    • To produce the termly calendar Organise School/Form and individual photographs
    • To coordinate the extra-curricular programme and oversee the approval of trips and expeditions
    • To conduct appraisals of individual staff
    • To be involved in the appointment of new staff as appropriate 

    Other roles

    • To teach some classes in an area of specialism
    • To lead assemblies
    • To arrange fire drills
    • To review relevant school policies and keep these updated Oversee the house points system
    •  Produce a weekly news bulletin for parents
    • Produce a termly staff information handbook
    • Oversee student handbooks

    Person Specification

    • Have a good honours degree, a teacher training qualification and a proven track record of successful teaching in the 11-18 age range
    • Have a good track record of leading and managing staff; envisioning, encouraging, supporting, monitoring and challenging colleagues
    • Have worked in a promoted pastoral role
    • Be committed to the ethos and values of Durham International School Kenya
    • Be able to work within organisational procedures and meet the required standards for the role
    • Be able to work collaboratively and supportively with colleagues within Durham International
    • School Kenya and with colleagues in other organisations
    • Be able to relate effectively to parents and to students
    • Be able to communicate clearly and effectively orally and in writing and demonstrate good ICT skills
    • Have a clear understanding of excellence in teaching and learning
    • Be patient, determined, enthusiastic and well-organised with a good eye for detail
    • Be committed to continual personal and professional development and be reflective and able to learn from past experience
    • Be resilient and demonstrate an ability to work well under pressure
    • Display commitment to the protection and safeguarding of children and young people
    • To undertake other reasonable requests at the direction of the Principal.
