    Head of Carbon

    About the role:

    SunCulture has reached an exciting phase in its development and is poised for significant growth. The organization is looking for a Head of Carbon to take the lead on Africa’s first solar irrigation carbon project, reporting directly to the CEO of SunCulture. The Head of Carbon is responsible for SunCulture’s carbon credit verification, sale of credits, and the exploration of future carbon business models to enable SunCulture’s growth across multiple African countries. 

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Carbon credit issuance and expansion: work closely with external consultants, SunCulture customers /  staff, third party auditors and standards (Verra) to coordinate all aspects of carbon monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) and issuance; work with counterparts in Uganda and Ivory Coast to scale SunCulture’s carbon project into our expansion markets
    • Sales and marketing: create and build a pipeline of potential carbon buyers, including brokers, marketplaces, and corporates; attend climate events; lead all aspects of the carbon credit sales process from buyers outreach to deal closing; update marketing materials
    • Partnership management / pilot: Explore innovative business models and pilots related to carbon with development partners, such as Shell Foundation, AfDB, MercyCorps, and smallholder farmers; work on securing grant funding for certain aspects of SunCulture’s carbon activities
    • Operations / finance: collaborate with the CFO and finance managers to build a carbon financial model for partners and update accordingly with financial requirements of the business; work closely with Director of Software / Director of Product, and COO to ensure that carbon stakeholders’ needs are met (i.e. IoT data collection for MRV) 
    • Impact: Work with partners (60 Decibels, Topl, SDVista, etc.) to validate and quantify SDGs and the impact of SunCulture’s carbon project
    • Strategy: Update senior leadership team and board at SunCulture on progress on a bi-weekly basis; deep dive into the compliance and voluntary market regulations

    Does this sound Like You?

    • 3-6 years of experience in carbon project development / sales or sustainability consulting; or similar experience
    • Deeply knowledgeable about most aspects of the voluntary carbon markets required
    • Experience selling carbon credits to corporates, brokers, and marketplaces strongly preferred
    • Bachelor's degree preferred 
    • Experience with Verra (or another carbon credit standard) is a plus
    • Fluent in English; French or Swahili a plus
    • Familiarity with / comfortable with financial models is a plus
    • Comfortable with ambiguity in a fast evolving environment - able to to plan, stay organised and meet deadlines
    • Experience working in sub-Saharan Africa strongly preferred; based in Kenya; potential for remote option
    • Strong interpersonal skills, highly organized, and  ability to manage different stakeholders to push objectives forward
