Horticulture Manager at Agricultural Employers’ Association

The successful candidate must have more than 5 years’ practical managerial experience and be able to demonstrate hands-on such experience. Reliable referees are a critical pre-requisite to applications being considered.

Key Responsibilities

1. To supervise the production and plant health in an expanding business venture.
2. Oversee budget planning and implementation for all production operations.
3. Overall management and cost control of the operations.
4. Introduce and uphold the requisite standards and certification; GlobalGAP, GRASP, SMETA and others.
5. To ensure all production practices are carried out in line with applicable standards with the application of all specific recommendations.
6. Enforce Company rules, procedures and policies.

Education and Professional Qualifications

1. Degree in Horticulture or Agriculture, with at least five years’ field management experience.
2. Practical experience in growing avocados and other high value horticultural crops within greenhouses is essential.
3. The candidate must have a sound knowledge of crop diseases, crop protection techniques and crop nutrition requirements. This will be tested extensively during the interview stage.
4. A good understanding of the horticultural value chain including cold storage requirements.
5. Good knowledge of farm certification for horticultural produce is required; GlobalGAP, SMETA (SEDEX) and other certification schemes.
6. Good and proven administrative and management skills.
7. Excellent people and Industrial Relations skills.
8. High level of integrity.
9. Self-Motivation, with the ability to motivate others.
10. Good communication, data management, organizational and time-management skills.
