    Intern - Security, Nairobi

    The WFP Security Unit in Nairobi is seeking an intern to provide essential support to critical unit functions and contribute to the successful implementation of the 2026 Security Unit workplan. The intern will support in the following areas:

    • Supporting critical functions: Assisting with documentation, reporting, and coordination tasks that are vital to the Kenya Country Office.
    • Contributing to the 2026 workplan: Providing operational and logistical support to ensure timely progress toward strategic objectives.
    • Enhancing efficiency: Freeing senior staff to focus on high-level priorities by taking on routine but essential responsibilities.
    • Offering a learning opportunity: Immersing in WFP’s security procedures and field operations, thereby building future capacity in humanitarian security.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Assist in administrative processes in Nairobi such as planning and preparation of field missions, armed escort requests.
    • Manage the registration and payment process for the Security Training Hub (18 courses across 2026)
    • Provide support to the new pilot training – Together in Safety and Security (8 courses across 2026 and provides opportunity for field travel)
    • Assist in preparation of security assessment reports after field missions.
    • Support compiling routine security reports and ensure relevant databases are accurately updated at all times.
    • Assist in the follow up of security related procurement processes and the quarterly compliance dashboard.
    • Draft and share a security newsletter which demonstrates the security units contributions on a quarterly basis.

    Expected Outcome

    This internship opportunity will allow the candidate to gain a comprehensive understanding of WFP’s procedures while being fully immersed in the daily functions of the Security Unit. The intern will provide essential operational support, contributing to the smooth execution of routine tasks and enabling the Unit to focus on strategic priorities.

    Through field travel—funded entirely via the Security Training Hub—the intern will experience firsthand the realities of field operations within WFP. This exposure will not only enrich their professional development but also strengthen their ability to assist the Security Unit in achieving its 2026 objectives.

    By combining practical learning with meaningful contributions, the internship ensures a dual benefit:

    • Capacity building for the intern: Developing skills in security management, humanitarian operations, and field coordination.
    • Operational reinforcement for WFP: Enhancing efficiency, supporting field missions, and enabling the Security Unit to deliver on its mandate more effectively.

    This internship will serve a dual purpose: addressing the immediate operational gap caused by the loss of support staff, while also fostering professional development for a young professional. The arrangement ensures continuity of critical security functions for the Kenya Country Office and strengthens WFP’s commitment to nurturing future talent.

    Qualifications Required:

    • Education: A recent graduate (within the last 6 months) with a Bachelors in Security Management, International Relations or Law Enforcement or other relevant field
    • Language Skills: Fluency in oral and written English.

    Computer literacy

    • Knowledge of computer applications for information collection, management and dissemination.
    • Strong computer skills; ability to draft unit communications and use Microsoft Office package.

    Additional skills/requirements

    • Adaptable to an international, multicultural, and multilingual environment
    • Availability and willingness to travel as required to different areas in Kenya
    • Good communication skills and be able to work in a team
