    Leaf Officer

    What are the key objectives and expectations from this role?

    • To supervise extension services to achieve agreed company quantity, quality, and cost objectives

    Key Accountabilities

    Operations/ Professional/ Business

    • Timely prepare crop plan for his/her area of operation, starting from farmer contracting to tobacco markets, Obtaining approval from line manager before execution.
    • Timely prepare, obtain approval from the (Area Leaf Manager) ALM, implement, and continuously monitor a crop action plans to produce the agreed quality, quantity, and cost of tobacco leaf.
    • Timely evaluate and communicate to the (Area Leaf Manager) progress on the approved action plan and leaf centre objectives to enable timely, effective, and efficient decision making.
    • Provide professional technical guidance and assistance to the extension contractor and farmers to enable them to grow high quality and quantity of tobacco for maximum returns to the farmers
    • Continuously evaluate competitor activity and put in place proactive mitigating measures to maintain competitive advantage.
    • Disseminate as appropriate company policy on Growing Tobacco to farmers and the community for good corporate image.
    • Implement, supervise and ensure compliance by all direct and indirect reports on all company guidelines and policies (EH&S, afforestation, SoBC, Procurement, General Standing Instructions, Fleet, IT, Accounting etc).

    Management

    • Effectively supervise loan issued to farmers to ensure crop quality and quantity objectives are met while minimising risk of loan defaulting.
    • Identify, evaluate and manage business risks within the supervision units' environment, implementing short- and long-term management measures while obtaining necessary approvals from the (Area Leaf Manager).

    Leadership

    • Train, develop and motivate all staff to ensure optimal individual output.

    Relationship

    • Identify community development projects in the area in liaison with the local leadership, communicate the same and supervise the implementation of those approved.
    • On a continuous basis manage employee welfare in the supervision unit.

    Innovation

    • Continuously evaluate current practices in supervision unit to identify and recommend possible areas of improvement.

    • Process delivery in terms of:
    • Volumes
    • Crop estimates
    • Quality
    • Cost
    • Loan recovery
    • Ability to train, develop and motivate the direct reports to highest levels of performance.
    • Minimise losses and damage to any company assets and stocks within this supervisory area.
    • Foster conducive business environment by developing a positive working relationship with local leadership and provincial administration.
    • Sustainability of tobacco curing materials e.g., wood fuel, briquettes
    • Maintain good corporate image.
    • Maintain high EHS standards

     Working Relationship

    Internal:

    • Established strong working relationship with middle and senior management as well as subordinates at all levels.
    • Develop formal and informal contact with Leaf managers and other staff to enhance mutual understanding and positive working relationship.

    External:

    • Develop rapport with the external public such as farmers, provincial administration, local business fraternity and competing companies to harness goodwill required to meet company business objectives.
