    Legal Officer

    Responsbilities

    • Advise the Board, senior management, and departmental heads on complex legal and regulatory matters. Provide formal written legal opinions and guidance on the company's business operations.
    • Conduct legal and compliance audits to proactively identify risks and recommend corrective actions.
    • Ensure rigorous organizational compliance with all statutory and regulatory requirements.
    • Draft, review, negotiate, and finalize all commercial contracts, agreements, MOUS, and letters for clients (e.g., Tuffsteel Ltd).
    • Prepare, review, and manage documentation for leases and licenses for tenants (e.g., Imaara Mall), ensuring timely execution and proper filing.
    • Support lease negotiations and finalization for new commercial property developments.
    • Follow up on tenant-related repairs, obligations, and necessary corrective measures.
    • Manage all company litigation and dispute resolution in close liaison with external counsel.
    • Coordinate witnesses and documentation to ensure compliance with procedural requirements in legal proceedings.
    • Develop effective litigation strategies and oversee alternative dispute resolution (ADR) mechanisms.
    • Handle comprehensive debt recovery processes, including issuing demand letters, statutory notices, engaging auctioneers, and liaising with the DCI.
    • Manage all insurance-related claims and disputes in collaboration with insurers.
    • Liaise with key government agencies and regulatory bodies (e.g., KENHA, Ministry of Labour, DCI) and represent the company in correspondence.
    • Provide dedicated legal advisory on employment and labour law matters to the HR department, drafting and reviewing related policies and dispute documentation.

    Requirements

    • Bachelor of Laws (L.L.B.) from a recognized institution.
    • Postgraduate Diploma in Law (e.g., from Kenya School of Law).
    • Admission to the Bar as an Advocate of the High Court.
    • Membership in a professional legal body (Law Society of Kenya).
    • A complementary degree in Law, Business Administration, or Public Administration is often preferred.
    • 3-5 years of post-admission experience in a law firm or corporate legal office.
    • Proven experience in contract drafting, litigation, and regulatory compliance.
    • Familiarity with construction law, property law, and commercial transactions
