    Maternity Cover Teacher of English in the Secondary School

    We are a leading British Curriculum School located in Karen –  Nairobi, Kenya, with an established status in the region’s educational sphere. We are looking to fill the position of:

    Maternity Cover Teacher of English in the Secondary School. This is a 3-month cover starting from April 2022.

    Reporting to the Head of Faculty, the teacher will teach English to IGCSE and A level and be responsible for Student Outcomes.

    DUTIES AND ROLES:

    1. Ensure effective learning for all students through excellent teaching and delivery of well-planned and organised lessons across key stages.
    2. Assess, record and report on the development, progress and attainment of students.
    3. Use appropriate strategies to ensure outstanding student progress and well-being.
    4. Set and mark challenging class and homework according to school policy.
    5. Support the development of teaching materials and courses of study.
    6. Liaise with parents and support staff to ensure excellent attainment.
    7. Support extended intervention/enrichment activities to enhance students’ learning experience.
    8. Manage the behaviour of students in classrooms and around the school.
    9. Maintain an organised and well-presented learning environment for students.
    10. Contributing to the maintenance of a supportive and stimulating learning environment for all students
    11. Support and uphold the requirements of school polices.
    12. Adhere to the staff code of conduct.
    13. Attend team/staff meetings and participate in open evenings.

    Person Specification:

    QUALIFICATIONS    

    ESSENTIAL    DESIRABLE

    1. Degree or equivalent in relevant subject        
    2. Qualified teacher status/TSC registration        
    3. Post graduate qualifications in teaching subject        

    EXPERIENCE    ESSENTIAL    DESIRABLE

    1. At least 2 years’ experience in teaching subject syllabus at both IGCSE and GCE A Level        
    2. Teaching that is good or better which impacts positively on student progress.        
    3. Broad knowledge of relevant curriculum areas at different Key Stages including a sound understanding of assessment and monitoring.        
    4. Experience of the use of data tracking and target setting to raise attainment        
    5. An understanding and appreciation of the value of interesting and stimulating display and other motivational materials.        
    6. Able to use ICT effectively.        
    7. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS    ESSENTIAL    DESIRABLE
    8. Excellent  knowledge of subject.        
    9. Commitment to and knowledge of effective strategies to maintain and raise attainment, in particular to address the differing needs which exist in the mixed ability classroom, which includes second language learners.        
    10. An enthusiasm  and commitment to teaching        
    11. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing with a range of audiences.        
    12. Proven administrative, time management and organisational skills

    5. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to relate well with students, colleagues, parents and wider community.        
    6. Flexible, able to work under pressure and meet deadlines.        
    7. Reflective practitioner who responds to change positively.        
    8. Possess legal status to work in Kenya        
    9. Understand importance of professionalism and confidentiality.        
    10. Commitment to being a role model for staff and students in relation to overall conduct to include the following: dress code, attendance and timekeeping.        
    11. A corporate citizen involved in the school community and  demonstrates Hillcrest’s philosophy and core values.
