    Nutritionist P1/NOA

    STANDARD MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Education: Advanced university degree in nutrition, public health, social sciences or first degree with 2 additional years of related work experience or trainings/courses.

    Experience: At least three years professional experience in designing and implementing nutrition programmes, and contribution to policy discussions and decisions. Experience in capacity strengthening, advocacy and HIV/TB programming preferred.
    Language: International Professional: Fluency (level C) in English language. Intermediate knowledge (level B) of a second official UN language: Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish, and/or WFP’s working language, Portuguese.

    National Professional: Fluency (level C) in English language and the duty station’s language, if different.

    JOB PURPOSE

    The Programme Policy Officer will support the design and implementation of the Kenya Country Office nutrition capacity support initiatives. These will include the gradual MAM programme handover as well as support to the HIV and Nutrition programmes.

    KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)

    Under the supervision of the senior Programme Policy Officer (Nutrition) and in close coordination with the Country Capacity Strengthening Unit, the Programme officer will be responsible for the following:

    • Contribute to the strengthening of national and county nutrition initiatives including the development of policies related to nutrition, as well as nutrition strategies, action plans, protocols and guidelines in compliance with national and international guidance and current evidence;
    • Contribute to the design and implementation of initiatives for a) handover of WFPs responsibilities for the treatment of Moderate of Acute Malnutrition programmes and b) Integration of HIV and Nutrition approaches;
    • Support to the identification, development and management of potential partnerships, including inter-sector collaboration, to ensure broad and evidence-based approaches to address malnutrition;
    • Manage partnership agreements with various Institutions including support to preparation and implementation of contractual agreements;
    • Support to ensure WFP and GOK staff are empowered to implement capacity strengthening processes;
    • Prepare accurate and timely reporting and learning, contributing to knowledge that informs decision making for WFP and other stakeholders;
    • Represent WFP in coordination and technical forums for HIV/TB and the Joint UN Team on AIDS, as well as national, regional and international meetings to contribute to technical discussions, exchange experiences, advocate for nutrition interventions and identify areas for potential collaboration.

    Knowledge of Nutrients Utilizes knowledge of vitamins and nutrients to understand the causes of malnutrition, the relationships between the different types of malnutrition, and is able to articulate the UNICEF conceptual model.
    Situation Analysis and Evidence Assessment Able to appropriately interpret the nutrition situation, analyze primary causes of malnutrition, define limitations to the analysis (e.g. seasonality) and prepare an overview of the food security and nutrition situation in country.
    Knowledge of Public Health Has foundational knowledge of the core public health sciences (i.e., biostatistics, epidemiology, social science, environmental health, and prevention of chronic and infectious disease and injury) in order to assess a country’s/region’s health situation.
    Knowledge of Food System Ability to analyze how food systems influence the diets of vulnerable groups and identify how and where food systems may contribute to specific nutrient gaps.
    Applying Programme & Policy Standards Leverages nutrition knowledge to provide technical advice to governments to design and implement country nutrition programmes that follow international and WFP agency standards and guidance.

    OTHER SPECIFIC JOB REQUIREMENTS

    Successful accomplishment of the assignment requires regular travel in project areas in Kenya.

    DESIRED EXPERIENCES FOR ENTRY INTO THE ROLE

    • Experience and exposure to implementation of national/international development programmes.
    • Experience working in public health/food security/ nutrition related activities.
    • Experience identifying and defining nutrition issues/problems within a country.
