    Plumber

    Main duties:

    • Installation, carry out routine maintenance serving and repair of all pipe work, fittings and water appliance.
    • Installation and maintenance of pressurised appliance like boilers, pressure vessels, water pumps and maintaining high pressurised fire water system / network.
    • Installation and maintenance of drainage and sewerage systems ensuring they are always operational. (These drainage and sewerage systems are hazardous).
    • Water treatment to achieve compliant chlorine levels in the water distribution network. This also include ensuring water treatment plants / system are always operational. The chemical used in water treatment and servicing of water treatment plants are / can be hazardous.
    • Disinfection, cleaning and inspection of showerheads
    • Carryout routine maintenance, servicing and repair of all pipes, fittings, and fixtures of heating, water, drainage, and sewage systems, according to specifications ensuring they are always operational.
    • Ensuring that water tanks are cleaned with the use of chlorine, carrying out water treatment and testing to achieve compliant levels in the water distribution network.
    • Assemble pipe sections, tubing, and fittings, using couplings, clamps, screws, bolts, cement, and plastic solvent.
    • Cut openings in structures to accommodate pipes and pipe fittings, using hand and power tools.  Fill pipes or plumbing fixtures with water and observe pressure gauges to detect and locate leaks. 
    • Able to diagnose faults, order spares and completes plant equipment logbooks for all heating, water, and drainage equipment.
    • Able to identify, make safe and isolate faulty or dangerous installations and equipment using appropriate procedures in compliance with MOD SRPs and organise the repair of the facility.
    • Maintain a working knowledge and understanding of the Petroleum Safety Rule Book as required by current SRPs.
    • Maintain a working knowledge and understanding of Confined Spaces JSP 375 Vol 3 Ch 6 and remain in date with breathing apparatus use and remain medically fit.
    • Comply with the Safe Systems of Work under MOD SRPs and act as Person in Charge for Petroleum.
    • Able to supervise junior tradesmen under his charge; monitor their progress and provide encouragement and constructive feedback without apportioning blame.
    • Respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis; identifies and communicates needed repairs; may participate in making repairs, transporting materials and equipment and other duties as directed. 
    • Department lead on Legionella Sampling Technician. 
    • Understand and adhere to Policies, functions and responsibilities, operations, and objectives of the organisation.
    • Comply with Pertinent UK, National and local laws, codes and regulations depending on work area. 

    Secondary duties:

    • Employees may be required (after sufficient training and experience) be required to carry out the duties of Confined Spaces, Working at Height, Petroleum, Mechanical Systems, Legionella and Asbestos competent person duties.
    • Employees are subject to call-back during emergencies on a 24-hour basis and are required to work occasional evenings, weekends, or holidays during special events.
    • Understand customers’ and suppliers; needs and explore practical solutions with them. You manage expectations by explaining what is and is not possible.
    • Delivering your own results and those of the team, keeping others informed of progress and possible problems.
    • Carry out any other duties commensurate with the trade/grade as directed by the MLM.
    • In accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1992, you have a duty to take reasonable care of your own health and safety and that of others that may be affected by your acts or omissions. You are to cooperate with the Garrison Engineer’s Department so far as is necessary to enable the Garrison Engineer to comply with his duties under the Act.  It is a disciplinary offence if you intentionally, or recklessly, interfere with or misuse anything provided in the interests of health, safety or welfare. You should inform chain of command of any dangerous situations or shortcomings in the current health and safety arrangements. BATUK’s Health and Safety Policy is laid down in Standing Orders, which you will be required to sign to say that you have read and understand the contents of the policy.

    Competences/qualifications/experience:

    Essential:

    • Trade test 1 as a minimum in plumbing with three years working experience in plumbing installation repairs and maintenance.
    • Kenya certificate of secondary Education (KCSE)
    • Methods and techniques of installation and maintenance of heating, water, and drainage systems.
    • Motorised and hand tools and equipment used in assigned work area.
    • Understand occupational hazards and standard safety practices and procedures.
    • Heavy equipment operation techniques.
    • Understand the principles and practices of supervision and employee development.
    • Interpret, apply and develop work procedures in accordance with standards and policies.
    • Able to work with changing priorities and uncertainty.
    • Awareness of occupational hazards and utilise standard safety practices.
    • Ability to respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis.
    • Accompany and assist external contractors undertaking Legionella testing and sampling regime.
    • Communicate effectively in English and Kiswahili both orally and in written.

    Desirable:

    • Hold valid Kenya driving License (Class B, C1 & C)
    • Competence in the installation and maintenance of solar water heating systems.
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with all personnel.
    • Legionella and associated hazard awareness.
    • Able to drive B vehicles as a minimum with a valid driving licence.

    Training Requirements:

    • Structure and Function of the British Army, Defence Estates and BATUK.
    • Equipment Care including Use and Maintenance.
    • Health and Safety at Work.
    • COSHH awareness.
    • Manual Handling.
    • First Aid & Fire.
    • MOD Safety Rules and Procedures
    • Confined Spaces, Working at Height, Petroleum, Mechanical Systems, Legionella and Asbestos training.
