Poultry Production Enterprises Officer - Kakuma at ECO SPREW

We seek to hire an experienced Poultry Production Enterprises officer who will be in charge of supporting (about 800) poultry farmers in the production of eggs and meat, as well as providing training and extension in the general management of poultry keeping enterprises in Kakuma.

Job Summary:

We are seeking an enthusiastic and committed Poultry Production Officer to join our team. The Poultry production officer will be supporting (about 800) poultry farmers in the production of eggs and meat, as well as providing training and extension to target farmers and will be responsible for assisting in the day-to-day monitoring of the operations in the target beneficiaries’ poultry farms, facilitating training and learning all aspects of poultry farming, facilitate both input and output market linkages and ensuring that the farms are running efficiently.

Responsibilities:

·         Promote learning on all aspects of poultry farming, including feed management, flock management, biosecurity, and farm maintenance.

·         Assist with the care and management of poultry flocks, including monitoring and maintaining bird health and welfare, and facilitating the aggregation/collection of eggs.

·         Assist with the implementation of biosecurity measures to prevent the spread of disease within the flocks and farms.

·         Assist with technical support and training on the maintenance of a poultry farm, including on cleaning and sanitizing barns and equipment, repairing and maintaining equipment, and managing waste disposal.

·         Assist with record-keeping and data management related to poultry flock management, including feed and water consumption, egg production, and bird health.

·         Facilitate learning and implementation of supplement feed production through, feed milling and mixing, protein rich insects rearing (Black Solder Flies, etc.), production of Azolla, enforcement of food safety practices and ensuring compliance with industry regulations and standards.

·         Participate in farmer training programs and attend industry conferences to continue learning about best practices in poultry farming.

·         Ensure that farmers’ activities comply with government regulations.

·         Monitor animal health and welfare, including liaising with vets.

·         Maintaining a knowledge of pests and diseases and an understanding of how they spread and how to treat them.

·         Ensure animal products are ready for deadlines, such as markets.

• Ensure health and safety standards across the poultry farms are strictly adhered to and followed.
• Supporting the poultry farmers in arranging and effecting the maintenance and repair of farm buildings, machinery and equipment.
• To ensure attainment of plans that support strategic direction by developing, implementing and evaluation of the poultry enterprises’ business plans, operating budgets and strategic plans from time to time.
• Contributes information, ideas, and research to help develop marketing strategies
• Help to detail, design and implement marketing plans for Chicken products.
• Develop strategies to advance marketing and sales for Poultry Enterprises.
• Answers questions from customers about product benefits.
• Maintains excellent relationship with customers through superior customer service.
• Analyses trends, data, demographics, pricing strategies, and other information that can potentially improve marketing and sales performance.
• Creates and presents regular performance reports.
• To safeguard both the project’s physical and intangible assets by instituting proper internal control systems and procedures.
• To ensure the Project Management are informed on the animals performance through provision of quality periodic reports.
• To ensure proper management of the project through carrying out their monitoring and evaluation.
• Budgeting and maintaining accurate financial records.
• Carrying out any other roles assigned by the Management from time to time.

Requirements:

• Certificate or diploma or equivalent in a related field of study.
• Over 5 years’ experience in a busy poultry farm
• Interest in agriculture and specifically poultry farming.
• Ability to learn and apply new knowledge quickly and effectively.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills.
• Physical ability to perform the duties of the job, including lifting and carrying heavy objects.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced and demanding environment.
• Prior knowledge in the production of Black Solder Flies and Azolla - Azolla pinnata (feathered mosquito fern), among others as feed supplements is a requirement.
• Skills in handling machinery such as egg incubators, feed mills and mixers is an added advantage.
• Ability to reside close to the farmers is a requirement.
• Willingness to work flexible hours, including early mornings, weekends, and holidays.
• Candidates for this role will be creative, charismatic, knowledgeable and exceptionally well-versed in the latest sales and marketing techniques as well as tried-and-true practices.
