    Project Manager, Media Development - TR Foundation

    Job Description

    For more than 35 years, we have promoted the highest standards in journalism by training reporters around the world to cover issues relevant to their local context, accurately and impartially. Today, we work to strengthen local and national journalism, improve media ethics, standards and regulation, combat misinformation, and explore and shape the future of the profession. We do this through newsroom consultancy, journalism training and mentoring, capacity-building, and via our funding of the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford.

    Our Media Development team provides support to journalists and independent media outlets to produce and distribute high quality journalism in some of the world’s most challenging environments. Our TrustLaw team runs the world’s largest pro bono legal network, through which it facilitates legal support, ground-breaking research, and training and resources for NGOs and social enterprises, including media organizations.

    We are seeking a Project Manager, based in Nairobi, to work with the Media Development and TrustLaw teams to implement a new media freedom project focused on East and Southern Africa. Although this role will report into the Media Development team, it will also work closely with the TrustLaw team to deliver against their objectives for the project When safe to do so, some travel is anticipated.

    Please note, this is a fixed term two-year contract.

    About The Role

    As a Project Manager at the Thomson Reuters Foundation, you will:

    • Ensure effective delivery of the Foundation’s Media Development and TrustLaw programmes, as appropriate, including compliance with client and contract requirements. Hold responsibility for financial oversight of allocated programmes by coordinating with colleagues, partners and finance team and serving as the primary focal point.
    • Produce reports to key stakeholders on programme progress, including preparing narrative, identifying success stories, and providing financial updates to donors.
    • Map and build relationships with key players in media freedom across the relevant countries and develop partnerships for delivery of the project.
    • Scope, research and manage events, coordinating content, agenda, logistics and attendees.
    • Define, document and manage where needed, working with multiple teams that may have differing priorities and working/cultural practices.
    • Develop implementation strategy in line with objectives, budget and stakeholder expectations, and adjust accordingly as implementation context evolves. Identify, assesses and manage risks to the success of the project.
    • Represent the Thomson Reuters Foundation to a wide range of stakeholders and at public events.
    • Effectively manage project team conflicts, build collaborative partnerships with stakeholders, and obtain commitment to make decisions.
       

    To Be Our Project Manager, You Will Likely Have

    • Experience working with international donors, particularly US partners. Familiarity with PM lifecycle (remote programme management, programme start up, mobilisation and close down) and donor reporting requirements, including Monitoring and Evaluation, Logical Frameworks and Theories of Change.
    • Excellent budget and financial management, including fluency in Excel.
    • Resilience, ability to cope with high pressure projects and work environments and find solutions to problems when they arise. Ability to quickly understand complex information and communicate to non-experts.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills – able to establish and maintain positive working relationships both internally and externally, with people from a wide variety of cultures and backgrounds.
    • Fluency in English; other languages (such as Swahili) would be an advantage.
    • Experience in a role in journalism/media, or a demonstratable understanding of the sector and its challenges would be an advantage.
    • Experience in media law/policy, or a demonstrable understanding of the media law/policy landscape in East and Southern Africa would be an advantage
