    Regional Director, Eastern & Southern Africa Region - TCIS

    • Reporting to the Senior Director, Regional Operations, the Regional Director will be responsible for developing and executing a sub-regional strategy for the Terwilliger Center in the Eastern and Southern Africa region in countries that are finally selected through an analytical and consultative process in which the Regional Director will have a central role (over a 2-to-3-year period, no fewer than 2 countries and likely no more than 4). The Regional Director will be responsible for developing and maintaining partnerships with the HFHI Area Office, Habitat National Organizations, and other private sector, public sector, and civil society partners.
    • This position is integral to HFHI’s Build & Influence strategic shift and responds directly to the market imperative for TCIS to prioritize and achieve scaled impact (while continuing to innovate) in the face of the persistently enormous global housing gap. This unique role will work with all practice areas of the Terwilliger Center promoting a culture of efficiency, accountability and impact within the team, as well as interdepartmentally.

    This position is based at our area office in Nairobi, Kenya and requires 40% travel
    Responsibilities
    Sub-regional strategy, design, & implementation (30%)

    • Lead the sub-regional strategy design and implementation through a portfolio of market systems development initiatives in a number of countries in the Eastern and Southern Africa sub-region that will be chosen through the research, design, and consultative process. Initiatives will include, but not necessarily be limited to TCIS programmatic priority areas such as enterprise and entrepreneurship, construction decisions and practices and housing finance systems – as well as cross-cutting themes such as climate / sustainability, gender equity, and youth engagement and employment
    • Develop and grow a network of private sector, public sector, and civil society organizations (including Habitat NOs) in the sub-region, and work with them to adopt, adapt and grow MSD initiatives in TCIS’ programmatic priorities

    Leadership and Management (30%)

    • Consistently model Habitat’s core values of humility, courage, and accountability, while also promoting TCIS’s unique character as an innovation center premised on curiosity, dynamism, nimbleness, and collaborative creativity
    • Work with TCIS colleagues to coordinate resource development activities in support of the sub-regional strategy
    • Contribute to and lead pre-positioning and proposal development and capture in the region
    • Lead a team responsible for developing partnerships and networks in the region to scale the work of the Terwilliger Center
    • Establish criteria, indicators, and goals for performance excellence of all line reports
    • Routinely conduct performance reviews and manage individual and team performance, accordingly, including but not limited to nurturing leadership, management, and technical expertise among staff, identifying and supporting opportunities for career advancement, and offering mentorship, coaching or other supports, as required
    • Devise individual development plans and ensure proper resourcing and follow through
    • Champion and foster embrace of and adherence to HFHI diversity, equity and inclusion commitments
    • Engage actively in the leadership of TCIS and HFHI through periodic participation in and contribution to wider organizational department and initiatives, such as cultivating strong working relations between other Integrated Programs divisions
    • Ensure compliance with company policy, including observance of HFHI guiding principles and desirable behaviors, as well as compliance with procedures and respect for internal deadlines.
    • In collaboration with peers within TCIS and HFHI (e.g., Ops team, GFN countries, National Organizations) assess and track business and resource development opportunities, prioritize contract opportunities, prepare concept notes and pitch proposals, and occasionally conduct joint market positioning activities
    • Manage effectively HFHI financial resources to enable the expansion of our business, by adhering to budgets and their restrictions or stipulations, and minimizing variances in forecast project execution/burn rates

    Coordinate with AO and Global Teams (20%)

    • Work with all TCIS verticals to ensure that they are contributing to the sub-regional strategy, and that the sub-regional strategy reflects their priorities as well.
    • Coordinate with TCIS verticals to access the technical, KM, MEAL, and operational support necessary to execute the sub-regional strategy.
    • Coordinate with the AO Management Team, as well as relevant AO staff and teams to ensure that they are aware of, and supporting the TCIS sub-regional strategy and initiatives and that the sub-regional strategy aligns with the AO regional strategy and relevant NO strategies.
    • Coordinate with other IP teams and other relevant global Habitat teams (e.g. OSM) to ensure alignment with, and support of the sub-regional strategy

    Support Resource Development (10%)

    • Work with TCIS colleagues to coordinate resource development activities in support of the sub-regional strategy
    • Contribute to and lead pre-positioning and proposal development and capture in the region

    Facilitate Global Networking and Representation (10%)

    • Facilitate global networking with potential strategic partners for sub-regional strategy implementation (INGOs, multinationals, donors, etc.)
    • Represent TCIS and Habitat in key global fora

    Requirements

    • Master’s degree in economics, business, international development or related field
    • 10+ years of demonstrated experience managing market systems development programming applying human centered design approaches and funded by large institutional donors
    • Experience managing teams working across multiple geographies across numerous sectors
    • Experience in housing or urban development, particularly applying systems thinking approaches
    • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, a proven ability to mentor staff, and demonstrated experience collaborating with different types of partners from diverse backgrounds and cultures
    • Outstanding written and oral English communication skills in particular the ability to write clearly, succinctly and engagingly about technical subject
