    Statistician/Analyst

    Position Summary:

    ICAP at Columbia University is seeking an experienced and qualified expert to fill the role of Statistician/Analyst for ICAP’s proposed CDC project, Strategic Use of Surveillance and Epidemiology to Support HIV Epidemic Control in Kenya under the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) (CDC-RFA-GH20-2042). Reporting to the Strategic Information (SI) Lead, the Statistician/Analyst will oversee statistical activities including sample size calculations, weighting, statistical analysis related to surveillance and clinic-based and population-based surveys. The position is based in Kenya.

    The position is contingent upon availability of grant funding.

    Major Accountabilities:

    • Directs sample size estimation and power calculations for project surveys
    • Directs development of survey weights for general and key population-based and clinic-based surveys, and any subsampling requirements
    • Provides technical inputs to health informatics team in the integration efforts of case-based surveillance (CBS) and recent infection surveillance digital platforms
    • Collaborates with the health informatics team to improve data visualization tools for CBS, including recent infection surveillance, and clinic/population-based surveys
    • Collaborates with geospatial analytics and cost analysis teams to enhance analytic content of surveillance and survey reports, presentations, and publications
    • Supports activities to build local capacity, including providing mentoring and training in sample design, sample size calculations, first and second stage sampling and development of survey weights to local implementing partners and the Ministry of Health
    • Develops protocols and guidelines of sampling and weighting plans and other relevant surveillance priorities
    • Leads preparation of technical documentation as needed for surveillance and survey outputs
    • Facilitates the aggregation, cleaning, and management of data
    • Participates in the monitoring of survey operations for quality assurance and efficiency, including defining tools and metrics to assist with the monitoring effort
    • Leads/collaborates on analyses for presentations and manuscripts of results

    Education:

    Advanced degree in epidemiology, statistics or related field.

    Experience, Skills, and Minimum Qualifications:

    • Minimum of 7 years of experience in statistical research in health; a minimum of 3 years working with large surveillance and survey data sets
    • Demonstrated experience managing complex, large-scale databases, with a focus on research methods
    • Expertise in survey statistics, as evidenced by supporting publications, presentations, and other accomplishments
    • Expertise in information and communication technology and data management software.
    • Excellent communication, writing, and quantitative skills, including the development of measurable objectives, operational plans and measurable indicators/targets for public health programs and projects
    • Fluent English oral and written communication skills
