Structural Design Engineer at ISM Africa

About the Role

• We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Design Structural Engineer with a strong background in steel construction to join our team. The ideal candidate must be professionally registered with the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) and possess proven expertise in the design, analysis, and delivery of steel structures across a range of projects.

• Graduate Engineers or candidates without full professional registration will not be considered.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the structural design and analysis of steel structures for commercial, industrial, and infrastructure projects.
• Prepare detailed structural calculations, design reports, drawings, and specifications in compliance with applicable codes and standards (e.g., Eurocodes, BS, or relevant local standards).
• Coordinate with architects, project managers, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure integrated design solutions.
• Review and approve shop drawings, fabrication details, and erection methodologies for steel works.
• Conduct site inspections and provide technical support during construction to ensure design compliance.
• Optimize structural designs for cost-efficiency, safety, and constructability.
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to internal technical excellence.
• Ensure adherence to health, safety, and quality standards in all design activities.

Minimum Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil/Structural Engineering (Master’s degree is an added advantage).
• Must be a Professionally Registered Engineer with the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK).
• Minimum of 5–8 years’ relevant experience in structural design, with a strong focus on steel structures.
• Demonstrated experience in designing steel frameworks, connections, and detailing.
• Proficiency in structural design software (e.g., ETABS, SAP2000, STAAD, Tekla Structural Designer, or similar).
• Strong understanding of steel design codes and standards.
• Proven ability to independently deliver complex design projects.
• Excellent communication, coordination, and report-writing skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in large-scale industrial or commercial steel projects.
• Familiarity with BIM tools and workflows.
• Strong project management and leadership capabilities.
