    Researcher

    The successful candidate will need to have excellent an understanding of what audiences are looking for in digital and social media content.

    Role Responsibility

    • Produce timely tip-offs, media reviews, basic updates and background information based on the monitoring of vernacular sources from the target area
    • Maintain a database of contacts, organisations and source information from the target area
    • Undertake administrative tasks as required
    • Play a role in the planning and strategic development of research as appropriate
    • Contribute story ideas and new angles on emerging narratives and long-running stories, including from a data perspective
    • Actively seek feedback from our users on our research offering; work with the Senior Broadcast Journalist/Editorial Lead and the rest of the team to interpret this

    The Ideal Candidate

    • An excellent level of spoken and written English. Swahili is also desirable.
    • Experience of carrying out tasks where attention to detail is particularly important
    • Ability to communicate effectively and to present complex information and ideas clearly and concisely
    • Editorial judgment and the ability to spot a story
    • An interest in African health and lifestyle
    • Willingness and enthusiasm to embrace new ways of working and new technology to find and analyse information and produce content and an ability to share/communicate what you know, or have learnt, to others in the team

    Senior Broadcast Journalist (Health)

    We are looking for a Senior Multimedia Broadcast Journalist with excellent spoken English and preferably also Swahili to work in a new Africa Health Unit delivering a weekly TV programme and original digital video content for African audiences. The successful candidate will need to have excellent knowledge of Africa and an understanding of what audiences are looking for in digital and social media content. They will have significant editorial responsibility and will be expected to plan, drive the creative vision and output the weekly TV show. They must demonstrate strong editorial judgement and solid journalistic skills. They will be able to write creatively, accurately and succinctly, and understand how to find and generate original and engaging stories that can work across all platforms. You will be adept at planning and producing video and TV packages, desk top editing, producing graphics, and arranging for guests to appear on our output.

    The job will require ambition, imagination and a large degree of initiative with the high editorial, journalism and production values expected by the BBC.

    Role Responsibility
    • To compile and output innovative Health & Lifestyle programmes and content offering new perspectives and deeper exploration to stories, interviews, profiles and digital content.
    • To be creative and influential in developing BBC’s Africa’s Health & Lifestyle agenda and set an example for the producers to follow and to formulate ideas which will inspire and inform audiences.
    • To plan, structure, write and produce content for use on TV, Digital and Radio and to develop treatments of the highest quality and with journalism at the heart.
    • To oversee and comply content and ensure it meets BBC standards and legal requirements.
    • To deputise for the Editor and line manage some member of the team, train and develop the staff.

    • Exceptional knowledge of health and lifestyle, in particular stories that appeals to an African audience and excellent contacts.
    • Proven skills in creating TV programmes or visual content to highest standards.
    • Strong digital understanding and awareness.

    • Proven editorial judgement and the ability to make decisions under tight deadlines
    • Creativity and ideas generation.
    • Well-developed organisational skills and the ability to maintain a high standard of performance whilst under pressure.

    Business Reporter, Africa TV

    We are looking for a Business Reporter to join our team in Nairobi on a continuing basis.

    Role Responsibility

    With excellent English and Swahili language skills, you will have experience of business reporting, delivering creative output for digital, TV and radio platforms.  Working closely with the London, Nairobi, Lagos and Johannesburg bureaux, you will prepare edited material either working in a self-op environment or with a craft editor to produce inserts and packages for the various outlets such as Business TV features, News bulletins, Online or social.  You will source and brief contributors for live and edited stories and interview them for broadcast and alert editors to breaking news, being ready to file accurate reports on the spot.

    The Ideal Candidate

    The successful candidate will have an excellent command of English and Swahili language (both written and spoken), with a strong journalistic and business reporting background.  A network in the business sector is essential.  Strong digital understanding and awareness of the latest broadcast technology and the ability to learn new skills is important.  You will have a strong broadcasting voice and a track record of accuracy and impartiality.  Knowledge of cameras to film professionally would be a distinct advantage.
