    Director Program Delivery, Africa

    What We Can Achieve Together

    • The Director Program Delivery, Africa oversees the implementation of TNC’s programs and projects in countries in alignment with TNC’s Africa conservation strategy and TNC’s global 2030 Goals. Working closely with TNC’s Africa’s Conservation Director, they will ensure alignment between the strategies and plans and TNC’s overall strategic objectives, priorities, and resources available and will apply a diversified knowledge of best practices to lead TNC’s country program efforts within the region and countries where we work.
    • This is a senior position at TNC and within the Africa Region and is a member of the Africa Leadership Team. The position will report to the Africa Regional Managing Director and will supervise the Country Directors. This position could be based in any country in Africa where TNC has a registered office (Angola, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Gabon, or South Africa).

    Responsibilities

    Strategic leadership:

    • Supervise Country Directors and support the development and implementation of country strategies and program/project plans.
    • Ensure alignment between the strategies and plans and TNC’s overall strategic objectives, pipeline priorities and resources available in country.
    • Apply diversified knowledge of best practices to lead TNC’s country program efforts within the region and countries where we work.

    Program and project delivery oversight:

    • Monitor the delivery status of program/projects in line with delivery plans and provide inputs to adapt the plans.
    • Draw synergies among country programs and projects.

    TNC strategy input:

    • Work with the Africa Conservation Director to provide inputs to TNC Africa's conservation strategy and resource allocation based on consolidated insights from countries.
    • Provide inputs to TNC Africa's science, policy, and fundraising priorities.

    Budget management:

    • Develop and administer departmental budgets in country programs.
    • Operates within budget guidelines to ensure sound financial performance.

    Partner management and network development:

    • Support partner capacity development toward achievement of TNC objectives in country.
    • Oversee the relationship and program and project delivery for strategic partners.

    Team development:

    • Facilitate the transfer of best practices and skill sets among country teams for smooth program/project delivery.
    • Manage multi-disciplinary administrative and professional staff with responsibility for performance management, training, and career development.
    • Establish clear directions and set stretch objectives.

    What You'll Bring

    • BA/BS degree and 15 years’ experience in conservation practice or equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Supervisory experience, including motivating, leading, setting objectives, and managing performance.
    • Experience designing, implementing, and directing complex or multiple projects of strategic importance, including managing finances, supervising multidisciplinary professionals, and coordinating the work of various partners while meeting deadlines.
    • Experience developing partnerships with non-profit partners, community groups and/or government agencies.
    • Experience in networking with high-level conservation contacts.
    • Experience conceiving and implementing strategic and creative initiatives involving multiple countries.
    • Experience negotiating and influencing, developing, and implementing conservation policy and plans at the division and/or global/international level.

    Desired Qualifications

    • Advanced degree in conservation, natural sceince international devt., business administration social sciences or other relevant fields.
    • Minimum of 10 years of progressive leadership experience in program and project management preferably in INGO context.
    • Previous oversight of country offices and multi-country programs and projects.
    • Experience delivering practical, adaptable products and services to customers.
    • Deep knowledge of conservation issues, preferably with expertise in regions that are TNC Africa's priorities.
    • Knowledge of politics and society with respect to environmental affairs.
    • Demonstrated leadership and visionary qualities and ability to work effectively with and through others in a decentralized and geographically dispersed organization.
    • Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English.

    Africa Conservation Director

    Responsibilities

    Strategic leadership:

    • Responsible for establishing and executing the TNC Africa conservation strategy.
    • Lead systems thinking approach in the delivery of TNC’s work in Africa.
    • Scope new opportunities and geographies to enable the team to deliver on 2030 Goals.
    • Lead the setting of TNC Africa conservation priorities, oversee portfolio management and program reviews with project and strategy teams to ensure we are delivering milestones according to schedule and budget.
    • Coordinate iterative strategy reviews, development and adaptation.
    • Supervise the use of scientific data in strategy and program development.
    • Ensure financial resources, conservation staffing, and operations are mobilized and aligned with established priority regional strategies and with 2030 Goals.
    • Lead and manage a large multidisciplinary team which supports conservation activities and develops new efforts.
    • Lead and develop key partnerships across national boundaries in support of strategic delivery on outcomes.
    • Liaise closely with the Regional Managing Director to adjust conservation priorities over time.

    Impact delivery:

    • Lead development of conservation programming for the annual Africa Region budget cycle.
    • Play a key role in fundraising and reporting to donors by working closely with our private and public fundraising teams.
    • Maintain and build partnerships in coordination with TNC’s global technical teams (Global Protect, Provide and Impact, Market and Finance teams).
    • Disseminate best practices to the conservation team in Africa and ensure training and scientific analyses support organizational measures of success.
    • Incorporate cross-disciplinary knowledge to support program objectives.
    • Build strategic, scientific, and technical capacity in the field, develop key partnerships with public and private organizations to identify and resolve technical issues and to widely communicate solutions and best practices, and develop innovative scientific methods, analyses, tools, and frameworks to address the natural system needs.

    Field Coordinator - Central Highlands Ecoregion Foodscape

    • Are you looking for a career to influence the transition to regenerative food systems for people and nature? We are looking for you. Your role as Field Coordinator - CHEF will be pivotal in facilitating the smooth running of CHEF projects to meet conservation targets. Your responsibilities will mainly be to manage relations with grassroots entities, as well as collaborating with stakeholders to ensure efficient land and resource management.

    Specific Roles And Key Responsibilities

    • Coordinate and organize project planning, gathering feedback, sampling (soil, water, resource, producers) exercises, and farmer/community awareness on agriculture-conservation nexus.
    • Support the CHEF director to liaise with key CHEF stakeholders on day-to-day basis, esp. farmers, community institutions (Water Resource Users Associations, cooperatives, etc.), extension, private sector, civil society to monitor timely implementation of all project lifecycles.
    • Ensure on daily basis collaboration with the CHEF Director and the Ag. Innovation Specialist to set up (and act as the main contact point for) the Foodscape Innovation Hub to supply conservation planning teams with site or landscape level information relevant to the planning process.
    • Collaborate with the Ag. Ecologist, Cropping Systems Specialist, and Innovation Specialist to ensure the integrity of collective learning sites – incl. ensuring that they consistently meet CHEF objectives.
    • Develop and maintain an adequate knowledge of the social, economic, political, and cultural characteristics of the sites.
    • Analyze situational information and identify educational needs of producers that can be met through the TNC Agriculture Strategy scaling activities.
    • Coordinate the CHEF Program staff in planning and stewardship to ensure that the DEIJ targets and compliance are achieved.
    • Prepare field plans of work relating to partners and producers relevant to the planning process.
    • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances. The position will involve frequent domestic and occasional international travel.

    What You'll Bring

    • Bachelor’s degree and 3 years’ experience in natural resource management, agriculture or similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience
    • Experienced in developing and maintaining excellent relationships with farmers, extension agencies, experts in relevant fields of agriculture (in the County Governments, Universities, Civil Society), and county/national officials involved with soil/land/water management, farming organizations.
    • Experienced with stakeholder perspectives and experience building relationships in day-to-day work.
    • Experience in problem-solving, and an ability to work capably on own initiative with respect to timelines for extended periods.

    Foodscape Innovation Specialist

    WE'RE LOOKING FOR YOU

    • Are you looking for a career to influence the transition to regenerative food systems for people and nature? We are looking for you. We are looking for a professional to lead our scaling strategy. You will operationalise the CHEF Foodscape Innovation Hub as a sustainability mechanism. You will lead a structured process founded in policy, to identify and implement immediate next steps, arrive at cost projections for different scaling scenarios, and develop an approach to engage county and national budget offices. You will be the main contact point for the entire Agriculture Strategy for Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) and the TNC Integrated Data Management Database (HUB).

    Specific Roles And Key Responsibilities

    • Coordinate data management among TNC partners, TNC strategies/ programs, and develop products and plans for the CHEF scaling strategy.
    • Ensure CHEF transdisciplinary status, by maintaining data integrity between parallel systems, including auditing and reconciling information interface discrepancy.
    • Delineate CHEF-wide lessons for policy engagement on biodiversity, water and climate change.
    • Articulate a clear, measurable, and timebound scaling vision based on the Agriculture Strategy contribution to TNC 2030 Goals.
    • Using a transdisciplinary approach, implement the CHEF monitoring and evaluation plan, ensuring that planned MEL activities are implemented, data is managed, and progress, including learnings, is established and disseminated to internal and external stakeholders. Work with the CHEF Field Coordinator and TNC MEL specialists to gather data on the scaling process and put in place an adaptation/continuous improvement plan for CHEF.
    • Assess partner organisational capacity required to fully implement the CHEF, including identifying capacity gaps and making recommendations on how to bridge them.
    • Set up the Foodscape Innovation Hub (FIH), working closely with CHEF director, government officials, private sector, and the CHEF Field Coordinator to ;
    • Identify enabling conditions and necessary partnership innovation required for sustainable scale, as well as obstacles or potential threats to consider.
    • Determine and lead necessary adaptations required to meet the evolving needs of expanded CHEF partners/populations, including the corporate and private sector.
    • Work with the Foodscape Innovation Hub partners to articulate financial sustainability plans that delineate how partnership resources will be mobilised, budgets considered, and existing systems and structures leveraged at various stages of scale.
    • Develop terms of reference for the most appropriate locations.
    • Determine the most appropriate locations for Foodscape Innovation Hubs to address current and future challenges for implementing regenerative food systems and lead the development of Terms of Reference for FIH governance teams.
    • Collaborate with Corporate Engagement to set up and influence a pre-competitive multi-stakeholder initiative to support regenerative food systems as part of the FIH. This includes supporting regenerative business models.
    • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
