    Mechanical Engineering II (Mechanical & Transport)

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • This will be the entry and training grade into this cadre. An Engineer at this level will work under the guidance of a designated supervisor. Duties and responsibilities will entail;
    • Taking part in preparation of designs and drawings for manufacturing mechanical components;
    • Taking part in fabrication of tools, equipment and machine/plant/vehicle component
    • Repairing and maintenance of vehicle, plant and equipment
    • Carrying out inspection and testing of vehicles, plant, machines and equipment
    • Taking part in installation, maintenance and repair of vehicles, plant, equipment and machinery in workshops:
    • Identifying vehicles, plant and mechanical equipment for relocation, repair, replacement, overhaul and disposal;
    • Carrying out tests, valuation and inspection of vehicles, plant and equipment;
    • Supervising examinations and grade/trade tests for drivers and plant operators;
    • Collecting and collating data for research;
    • Collecting and compiling data on inventory of vehicles, plant, and equipment throughout their life cycle; and

    Requirements for Appointment

    Artisan Mechanical (General Fitting, Machining/Turning. Welding And 8 locksmith) III

    Duties and Responsibilities

    This will be the entry and training grade for this cadre. An officer at this level will work under the guidelines of a designated supervisor. Duties and responsibilities will entail;-

    General fitting

    • Participating in assembling machinery and equipment according to technical specification;
    • Taking part in aligning and connecting mechanical components;
    • Participating in testing machinery to ensure proper functioning;
    • Cleaning and lubricating machinery component to ensure optimal performance:
    • Taking part in replacing and replacing defective parts such as bearing, gears, valves and pumps;
    • Cutting and fabricating tasks to repair metal components; and
    • Collecting and collating data on records and inventory pertaining to general fitting services

    Machining/ turning

    • Machining      to    perform    turning,     grinding,     milling,     facing,    boring, drilling, threading, grooving, operations on metal work pieces;
    • Loading raw materials such as metals bars rods or billets into the lathe and secure them safe for machining;
    • Taking part in setting-up manual or computer numerical control (enc) machines according to work piece specification and engineering drawing:
    • Installing cutting tools, toolholders and work holding fixtures such as chucks, collates or centers;
    • Replacing damaged or defect cutting tools and sharpening them to maintain cutting performance;
    • Operating machining tools and equipment’s; and
    • Collecting and collating data for records and inventory pertaining to machining services;

    ​​​​​​​Welding

    • Cutting, shaping, assembling of materials and operating of welding machines;
    • Performing visual inspection and tests such as dye-penetrant, ultrasonic pressure tests to verify integrity and strength strength of welds:
    • Undertaking welding maintenance works; and
    • Collecting and collating data for records and inventory pertaining to welding works and equipment

    ​​​​​​​Blacksmith

    •  Heating metal in a forge until it reaches malleable temperature and shape metals;
    • Joining metal components to ensure proper alignment and maintain structural integrity. and aesthetic appeal;
    • Taking part in heat treatment on metals to enhance its mechanical properties;
    • Maintaining tools and equipment to ensure optimal performance and longevity;
    • Operating equipment and machine;
    • Taking part in inspection and testing metal works to ensure dimensional accuracy and structural integrity in adherence to specifications: and
    •  Collecting and collating data for records and inventory pertaining to forging works and equipment

    Requirements for Appointment

    For appointment of this grade. a candidate must have:

    • Government Trade Test  II  in  any  of the  following  options;  General  Fitting,
    • Turning Welding, Blacksmith from a recognized institution; and

    Artisan Auto-Electrician (Motor Vehicle And Plant) III

    Duties and Responsibilities

    This is the entry and training grade for this cadre and the officer will work under the supervision and guidance of a designated supervisor

    Duties and responsibilities will entail:

    • Taking part in diagnosing, correcting simple faults and determining necessary repairs on plant and equipment;
    • Carrying out service and minor of plant and equipment for compliance with safety standards;
    • Taking part in identifying faults in plant and equipment;
    • Taking part in identifying required spare parts, tools and equipment;
    • Observing safety protocols in the provision of mechanical works in plant and equipment; and
    • Keeping cleanliness in working area and proper disposal of workshop waste.

    Requirements for Appointment

    For appointment to this grade, a candidate must have:

    • Government Trade Test Certificate Grade III in Auto Electrician from a recognized institution; and
    • Proficiency in computer application.

    Environment And Natural Resource Officer

    Duties and Responsibilities

    This is the entry and training grade for this cadre. An officer at this level will work under the guidance of a senior officer. Duties and responsibilities will entail:

    • Collecting and collating data and information related to environment and natural resource;

    Principal Engineer (Roads)

    Duties and Responsibilities

    •  Supervising construction, rehabilitation and maintenance activities of roads and highway structures;
    • Reviewing plans and design for development and maintenance of roads:
    • Developing and implementing road design manual and other manuals related to highways;
    • Developing and coordinating implementation of road safety engineering programs and risk management plans for road infrastructure with relevant stakeholders;
    • Preparing specifications and contract documents for tendering of road related works;
    • Conducting feasibility studies and environmental social impact assessment to determine viability for development of road infrastructure;
    • Designing mechanism for protection of road reserves and access to roadside developments;
    • Conducting quality assurance, technical and performance audits on ongoing and completed road projects for compliance with relevant laws, regulations and standards;
    • Carrying out pavement evaluation and structural integrity surveys on existing roads and highway structures: and
    • Taking part in preparation of Roads Sector Investment Programmes (RSIP) for maintenance. rehabilitation and construction of roads in consultation with other key stakeholders.
    • Monitoring and evaluating ongoing and completed road project to ensure compliance with specifications, standards, laws and regulations;
    •  Identifying arrears of research and preparing proposals:
    •  Carrying out research in emerging trends and technologies in road infrastructure development and maintenance:
    • Up to-dating information pertaining to road works and inventory: Preparing progress reports:
    • Preparing works plans; and Guiding and counseling staff.

    Requirements for Appointment

    For appointment to this grade, an officer must have:

    •  Served for a minimum period of nine (9) years, three (3) years in the grade of Senior Engineer (Roads) or in an equivalent and relevant position:
    •  Bachelor of Science or Engineering degree in any of the following disciplines: Civil Engineering, Civil and Structural Engineering, or its equivalent qualification from a recognized institution:
    •  Registration as a corporate member of the institution of engineers of Kenya (MIEK):
    • Registration by Engineers Board of Kenya as a professional Engineer:
    • Valid annual practicing license from the Engineers Board of Kenya:
    • Proficiency in computer applications: and
    • Shown merit and ability as reflected in work performance and results.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • medium and high density topographical  surveys, general  engineering surveys,  sub-divisional schemes. medium area cadastral and photo control surveys.

    Artisan Mechanical (Panel Beating, Spray Painting And Upholstery) III

    Duties and Responsibilities

    This will be the entry and training grade for this cadre, An officer at this level will work under the supervision and guidance of designated supervisor

    Duties and responsibilities will entail:

    Panel Beating

    Duties and responsibilities will entail:

    •     Inspecting vehicles, plant and equipment to assess the extent of damage to body panels, frames and structural components;
    •      Preparing damage repair estimates for vehicles, plant and equipment;
    • Dismantling, straightening reshaping, repairing and assembling of body panels using the prevailing standards and guidelines;       '
    • Restoring vehicle frame to factory specifications and ensure structural integrity and safety;
    • Filling and smoothening imperfections with body filler to achieve a level surface;
    • Adhering to safety protocols in the provision of forging works:
    • Keeping records and inventory pertaining to panel beating works and equipment: and
    • Complying with environmental regulations

    Spray painting

    Duties and responsibilities will entail:

    • Taking part in preparing surfaces for painting using various techniques;
    •  Taking part in repairing paint work defects to meet quality standards:
    •  Adhering to safety protocols in the provision of spray painting works;
    • Taking part in maintaining of spray-painting equipment and mechanics; and
    • Maintaining cleanliness in working area and proper disposal of workshop waste.

    Upholstery
    Duties and responsibilities will entail:

    •  Taking part in selecting of suitable fabrics, vinyl, leather or other materials for upholstery works;
    •  Taking part in maintaining upholstery equipment and machines:
    •  Taking part in repairing upholstery panel and cushion covers;
    • Adhering to safety protocols in the provision of upholstery works;
    • Keeping cleanliness in working area and proper disposal of workshop waste: and
    •  Taking      part    in    collecting data     on    records,  information       and inventory pertaining to spray painting works.

    Requirements for Appointment

    For appointment to this grade, a candidate must have:

    • Government National Trade Test II in any of the following options: spray and painting, panel beater, upholstery from a recognized institution; and
    •  Proficiency in computer applications.

    Senior Engineer (Roads)

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Taking part in supervising road works:
    • Taking part in preparing detailed design and working drawings for construction, rehabilitation and maintenance of all roads and highway structures:
    • Taking part in quality assurance technical, performance and road safety audits and preparing draft reports:
    • Taking part in implementation of road safety engineering programs and risk management activities:
    • Taking part in feasibility studies to determine viability for development of roads, infrastructure projects and environmental, social impact assessment;
    •  Taking part in pavement evaluation and structural integrity surveys on existing roads;
    •  Drafting tender documents and carrying out cost estimates for road works:
    • Compiling and analyzing data on ongoing and completed road projects and preparing data progress reports; and
    • Compiling and collating data pertaining to road works and inventory.

    Requirements for Appointment

    For appointment to this grade, an officer must have:

    • Served for a minimum period of six (6) years, three (3) years in the grade of Engineer I (Roads) or in an equivalent and relevant position:
    • Bachelor of Science or Engineering degree in any of the following disciplines: Civil Engineering, Civil and Structural Engineering. or its equivalent qualification from a recognized institution:
    • Certificate in Management Course lasting not less than four (4) weeks from a recognized institution;
    • Registration by Engineers Board of Kenya as a Graduate Engineer:
    • Proficiency in computer applications; and
    • Shown merit and ability as reflected in work performance and results

    Plant Operators III

    Duties and Responsibilities

    This is the entry and training for plant operators, a candidate at this level will work under the guidance of a designated supervisor. Duties and responsibilities will entail:

    • Operating machines of ‘difficult rating’;
    • Assisting machine attendants in identifying possible breakdown,
    •  Liaising with mechanics for servicing,
    • Making daily and weekly oil checks, and
    • Maintaining the cleanliness of the plants.

    Requirements for Appointment

    For appointment to this grade, a candidate must have:

    • Plant Operator Certificate from Kenya Institute of Highway &Building Technology (KIHBT) or any other recognized institution;
    • Passed the Suitability Test for Plant Operators grade III
    • Valid and current driving license;
    •  Be able to operate at least two (2) plants of ‘difficult rating’;
    • Attended a first-aid course lasing not less than one (1) week from St. john ambulance of Kenya Institute of Highway And Building Technology (KIHBT) or any other recognized institution; and
    • Proficiency in computer applications.

    Requirements for Appointment

    For appointment to this grade. a candidate must have:

    • Bachelor of Science or Engineering Degree in any of the following disciplines: Civil Engineering, Civil and Structural Engineering, or its equivalent qualification from a recognized institution;
    • Registration by Engineers Board of Kenya as a Graduate Engineer: and
    • Proficiency in computer applications

    • Diploma    in    any    of the    following    disciplines:    Civil Engineering,    Highway Engineering. or its equivalent qualification from a recognized institution:
    • Proficiency in computer proficiency; and
    • Registered    by    Kenya    Engineering    Technology    Registration    (KETRB)as a Candidate Engineering Technician.
