    Journalist (Video)

    We are looking to recruit two video journalists based in Nairobi to join the digital innovation team in Nairobi. The journalists will be responsible for gathering and producing original video for our digital platforms.

    These are attachments / fixed term contracts for 12 months.

    Role Responsibility

    You will be required to create short and medium form digital content and remote produce social and digital content produced by reporters so that the final output is of highest quality.  You will be able to build and maintain effective working relationships with a range of people for video gathering in African countries.

    The Ideal Candidate

    The successful candidate will be an experienced journalist and filmmaker, with a track record in originating, creating and curating social and digital content.  An understanding of African current affairs and the audience needs is important.  You will be able to use FCPX or equivalent video editing software and Photoshop to a high standard.  Fluency in English (written and spoken) is essential.

    Senior Journalist Team Manager, Africa Digital

    We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Journalist Team Manager to join our digital hub in Nairobi to lead and develop our multi-disciplinary digital team.

    Role Responsibility

    Your role is to lead and inspire a multi-disciplinary digital journalism team based in Nairobi, made up of news journalists, designers, software developers and social media specialists.  The team works across 12 African language services including English, Amharic, Tigrinya, Afaan Oromo, Swahili, Somali, French, Great Lakes, Pidgin, Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa.  The aim is to create original and innovative content, new forms of digital storytelling and journalism that reaches 111 million people in Africa.  There is a particular focus on underserved audiences, including young and female audiences.

    The Ideal Candidate

    The successful candidate will have demonstrable experience in a senior journalistic role with in-depth knowledge of African news and international current affairs.  You will be a skilled team leader who understands how to create an inclusive workplace.  Experience of managing budgets and observing tight financial targets is important.  A full command of English (written and spoken) is essential.  A track record of accuracy and impartiality and sound editorial judgement is important.  You must have excellent knowledge of digital analytics, Africa's digital market and how they can be used to improve output and drive change.  Experience in either visual journalism, medium and long-form digital video production and features and investigations would be a distinct advantage.

    News Editor, BBC Tigrinya Service

    BBC Tigrinya is one of the BBC’s newest language services, serving our audiences in Ethiopia and Eritrea.  We have an exciting opportunity for a News Editor to lead our team of journalists in Nairobi.  This role requires significant senior editorial and team management experience.

    Role Responsibility

    Reporting to the Head of East Africa, your role is to ensure the highest quality journalism is produced for all content in the Tigrinya language.  You will develop, implement and adapt a long term strategy for the Tigrinya Service.  We expect you to establish and develop the news agenda, ensuring our journalists create original and engaging content which is relevant for our audiences.  You will oversee a team of journalists, providing excellent leadership and training as well as managing deployments, rotas and commissioning.  You will use your digital journalism skills and knowledge to develop our digital platforms and maximise audience engagement across the Horn of Africa region.  You will also be responsible for managing the service’s budget, including programme expenditure and resources. 

    The Ideal Candidate

    The successful candidate will have a full command of Tigrinya (written and spoken), as well as an understanding and appreciation of the various dialects of the written and spoken language.  A broadcast-standard level of English is essential.  You will have demonstrable experience in a senior editorial capacity with extensive knowledge of broadcast news and the complexities of political and socio-political issues in Eritrea and Ethiopia and the wider Horn of Africa region.  You will have highly developed communication skills and the ability to motivate and develop editorial staff to make innovative and imaginative content.  You must have evidence of making major editorial decisions with authority and under pressure.  You will also be able to manage resources, staff, technical facilities and large scale budgets, in order to make creative programmes in the most cost effective manner.  Knowledge of digital platforms and how audiences in the target region access and consume digital content is important.
