We are looking to a Video Journalist based in Nairobi to join the digital innovation team. The Journalist will be responsible for gathering and producing original video for our digital platforms.
Role Responsibility
The Video Journalist will be responsible for gathering and producing sharable original video for our digital platforms. You will be required to create short and medium form digital content and remote produce social and digital content produced by reporters so that the final output is of highest quality. You will be able to build and maintain effective working relationships with a range of people for video gathering in African countries.
The Ideal Candidate
The successful candidate will be an experienced journalist and filmmaker, with a track record in originating, creating and curating social and digital content. An understanding of African current affairs and the audience needs is important. You will be able to use FCPX or equivalent video editing software and Photoshop to a high standard. Fluency in English (written and spoken) is essential.

We are looking for web developers who are enthusiastic about online journalism to join a BBC World Service Visual Journalism team in Nairobi. The World Service Visual Journalism hubs will be made up of an editor, and UX designer and a developer.
You will be based in Nairobi and also be an active member of a wider international development team. You will have the freedom to work on locally defined projects, but will be supported by structures and processes that ensure you will have excellent training and development opportunities and are always backed up by a team who will help you produce work to the highest standard.
Role Responsibility
As the developer in this team you will be responsible for building technical solutions to meet the requirements of the local design and editorial team. You will be assessing the technical feasibility of projects, giving realistic time estimations for the work required as well as escalating any technical queries and designs where new or innovative approaches are being used for review to the wider technical team. You will also be liaising with the wider Software development team in BBC News to ensure that all deployments to the live servers are peer reviewed and managed via GitHub with a London based Lead Developer across the process.
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have excellent front end web development skills including HTML, CSS, JavaScript programming with knowledge of developing large and modular applications. You will have the ability to write in ES6 and an appreciation of backwards-compatible / cross-browser JavaScript. You will have experience in building both front and backend workflows and building new platforms and tools that help reporters and readers better understand and explore large data sets.
Experience in supporting all browsers with core content and ensure compliance with screen readers in accordance with WAI standards etc is essential. You will have great understanding of UX concerns and have familiarity in using GitHub workflows, API’s and some with AWS or similar Cloud Infrastructure and associated tooling. Experience of webpack would be desirable.
