    Associate

    Job Summary

    You will support the Innovation Lab’s work on two principal objectives. The first is working with mini-grid developers to identify and test innovative solutions to the mini-grid business model, managing an iterative process of piloting and refining ideas. Based on the results of these experiments, your second objective will focus on identifying the most successful solutions and working with developers and technology and industry partners to scale those innovations, thereby directly changing the mini-grid business model.
    CrossBoundary is not a development firm and is not seeking typical development skills – the Innovation Lab will look to you for practical insights on how to improve the mini-grid business model to bring more power, to more people, at less cost.

    Qualifications

    • Ideal candidate will have the following skills and qualifications:
    • Ability to think creatively to find innovative solutions to business model gaps
    • Excellent analytical ability and discipline; ability to think clearly, structure problems logically, and then design and implement solutions that focus on the core issues
    • Strong project management skills; ability to juggle and deliver a multitude of projects across contexts, geographies, and stakeholders
    • Strong communication skills; ability to distil complex findings into convincing, compelling messages and present results in a clear and simplified manner
    • Ability to coordinate diverse range of stakeholders in challenging environments

    Required skills and qualifications:

    • Pre-MBA/Masters candidate with 2-4 years of work experience in high impact organizations
    • Experience in developing countries, and a technical background (preferred)

    Responsibilities

    • Project-manage field trials of innovative business model improvements across Africa
    • Work directly with mini-grid developers operating mini-grid sites across Africa to field test prototype innovations that might reduce cost or increase revenues
    • Lead quarterly workshops with mini-grid developers across the continent, to ideate new prototypes, solicit their feedback, and introduce them to technology and industry partners
    • Develop creative iterations to the most promising innovations, based on early findings of business model impact and hurdles developers face in implementation
    • Alongside the Lab Lead, oversee the deployment of $2.2M of R&D funding to mini-grid developers conducting iterative, cutting-edge trials to change the mini-grid business model
    • Alongside the Lab Lead, assess each innovation’s impact on the business model using the Lab’s unique dataset of over 550M data points on rural customer behavior
    • Use the Lab’s financial model to evaluate the impact of each tested innovation on the mini-grid business model, incorporating analysis from the Lab Data Lead,
    • Partner with the Lab Data Lead to identify iterations with the largest potential to improve the business model based on the analysis conducted
    • Develop the tools and partnerships needed to enable developers to incorporate the most promising innovations into their day-to-day operations
    • Publish “how to” guides on the most promising innovations for the entire sector, incorporating lessons learned from developers on the ground and insights gained through the Lab’s data analysis
    • Create commercial frameworks for mini-grid developers to partner with leading technology and industry partners
    • Build the business case for the most promising innovations tested by the Lab’s community of mini-grid developers
    • Manage and develop relationships with the leading institutions and companies in the energy access sector, including:
    • Mini-grid developers: 18 leading private sector mini-grid developers across Africa
    • Technology partners: companies on the cutting edge of innovation in energy access, such as Angaza and ZOLA Electric
    • Industry partners: organizations building the sector and leading advocacy efforts, including the Africa Mini-Grid Developers Association and Power for All
    • Thought partners: top tier academic institutions conducting new research on off-grid energy, including University of Massachusetts Amherst and Duke University

    Data Associate

    Job Summary

    CrossBoundary is recruiting a full-time Data Associate. We are seeking candidates with experience working in data consultancy, with a background in the investment sector preferred.
    CrossBoundary is not a development firm and is not seeking typical development skills. CrossBoundary Data Analytics combines domain expertise with advanced analytical methods and techniques to facilitate investment in frontier markets. As a Data Associate, you will be tasked with using data science to inform CrossBoundary’s work providing transaction support to both investors and capital seekers. Associate candidates should have 3+ years of experience working in high caliber data consulting organizations and ideally experience working in developing countries.

    Qualifications

    The Ideal candidate will have the following skills and qualifications:

    • 3+ years of experience in top tier data consulting, or similar
    • Programming experience in at least one of R, Python, SQL
    • Experience in geospatial analysis, using ArcGIS or similar
    • Experience applying data science methods to business problems, making use of predictive analytics, machine learning, and other areas of analysis
    • Experience in applying advanced analytical and statistical methods in the commercial work
    • Excellent analytical ability and discipline; ability to think clearly, structure problems logically, and then design and implement solutions that focus on the core issues
    • Excellent presentation and communication skills; ability to communicate clearly and effectively with diverse audiences unfamiliar with data science
    • Strong project management skills
    • Bachelor's degree required

    Preferred skills and qualifications:

    • Experience working in developing countries; experience in Africa is particularly relevant
    • MSc, MBA, or other advanced degrees will be regarded favorably

    Responsibilities

    • Use data science approaches to advance CrossBoundary’s mission of facilitating investment in frontier markets, working with large, complex data sets to support Advisory projects as well as other CrossBoundary teams internally
    • Develop creative new methods to use data for business and investment decision-making and strategy
    • Contribute data science solutions to proposals for new work, both in collaboration with Advisory teams and for stand-alone data science consultancy opportunities

    Investment Associate

    Job Summary

    CrossBoundary is recruiting a full time Associate to work on energy access finance. CrossBoundary is not a development firm and is not seeking typical development skills. We are seeking a highly motivated individual with previous exposure to project and medium-scale infrastructure finance in private sector organizations such as renewable energy project developers, infrastructure funds, and investment banks.

    You will work on finding and deploying all types of capital required to finance the mini-grid sector at scale. You will help identify and implement, innovative financing structures to mobilize equity, debt and grant funding from a range of capital providers.

    Candidates should have notable investment or private sector experience and possess strong quantitative and analytical skills. Experience working in developing countries is preferred. Experience working in project finance, renewable energy, retail energy markets, and/or off-grid energy is also preferred. An engineering degree or technical background will be regarded favorably.

    Qualifications

    Ideal candidate will have the following skills and qualifications:

    • Strong quantitative skills; familiar with valuation and project finance
    • Excellent analytical ability and discipline; ability to think clearly, structure problems logically, and then design and implement solutions that focus on the core issues
    • Ability to develop financial models for a wide range of structures and scenarios
    • Understanding of key commercial terms in legal contracts
    • Ability to build strong relationships with partners and colleagues in challenging environments
    • Excellent presentation skills; ability to communicate clearly and effectively with diverse audiences
    • Self-starter who is passionate about creating lasting change in frontier markets
    • Comfort with ambiguity; ability to operate effectively in a changing context
    • Willingness to work and live in a sometimes-challenging environment

    Required skills and qualifications:

    • 2 - 5 years in top tier banking, infrastructure investing, project development, or similar
    • Bachelor's degree required; MBA or other advanced degrees preferred
    • Experience working in developing countries will be regarded favorably
    • Experience working in renewable energy, retail energy markets, or off-grid energy
    • An engineering degree or technical background will be regarded favorably
