    Software Engineer (South Africa / Kenya / Portugal)

    About this job

    As a Software Engineer you will be accountable for solving complex technical problems in the fintech field with solutions that are scalable, testable, maintainable, and efficient. You will report to the Tech Lead.

    In this role, you’ll

    • Consistently write code that is easily testable, easily understood by other developers and accounts for edge cases and errors.
    • Ensure that tasks are appropriately sized at the beginning for continuous integration and incremental delivery, weigh cost and value to make pragmatic decisions with help from teammates and manager.
    • Create reasonable sized PRs with a description of changes, testing conducted and impact of deployment.  Also reviews PRs with the lens of quality and value.
    • Understands the testing pyramid and writes unit tests and service integration tests in accordance with it, as well as assisting in writing end-to-end tests
    • Uses a systematic approach to debug issues located within a single service, and uses a range of tools to detect when there is an incident and raises this with stakeholders in a timely manner.
    • Design functions that are aligned with the overall service architecture.
    • Understand the importance of security and foster a security first mindset 
    • Helps their teammates overcome obstacles, resolve blockers, and complete work tasks. Volunteers for team tasks.

    What you’ll need

    • Strong experience with Python, and a cloud-based infrastructure, ideally AWS.  Kotlin / Java / Scala experience will be an added advantage OR
    • Strong experience in only Kotlin / Java / Scala
    • Experience designing, developing and testing software
    • Hands-on experience with the design and development of high-volume/low-latency services
    • Good communication skills & EQ – able to work in a diverse team

    Country Manager // East Africa (Kenya and Uganda)

    About this job

    As Country Manager // East Africa you will be accountable for the success of JUMO across East Africa. You will be responsible for operationalising and growing the business in line with the JUMO Growth and New Markets (GNM) strategy by deploying the JUMO technology stack to connect entrepreneurs and consumers to inclusive financial services.    You will report to the General Manager // In-Market Operations.

    In this role, you’ll

    • In coordination with other teams, operationalise the country strategy for JUMO East Africa, aligned to and integrated with the overall JUMO mission and JUMO GNM strategy.
    • Drive engagements with existing and potential partners. Leveraging your existing networks, identifying key influencers and initiating engagements to build and maintain strong partnerships that are mutually beneficial. Counterparties include:
      • Capital providers such as Tier 1 FSPs, MFIs, Government and Development funds.
      • MNOs, wallet providers, affiliates and other consumer network partners.
      • Government, Central Bank and other regulatory and industry bodies.
    • Contribute to overall performance by maximising the value of each JUMO ecosystem. This will extend to identifying and capitalising on new opportunities, partnerships and industry trends.
    • Be the project manager for all new initiatives, enhancements and experiments run in the country. The CM will be responsible for reporting on progress of the project both internally with support from project teams as well as externally to relevant partners.
    • Represent JUMO in country at all relevant platforms for promoting and extending JUMO’s overall strategy for Uganda and Kenya.
    • Work closely with the rest of JUMO GNM & Group to deploy the JUMO business model(s). Therefore working with the:
      • GNM Leadership Team – aligning local strategy to the GNM strategy
      • Product and Partnerships – leading project teams to develop products and/or business models to be deployed.
      • Capital Strategy team – securing local capital via FSPs and other appropriate funding sources
      • Portfolio / Prediction team – maximising portfolio performance and providing explanatory commentary to partners as needed.
      • Legal Team – negotiating contractual terms with partners / affiliates
      • Customer experience / success team – ensuring adequate and timely customer support for all in country products.

    Capabilities

    • Ability to manage external relationships across levels from Jnr Management to Executives.
    • Strong commercial and business acumen, particularly someone that can easily operate across a number of disciplines and has the ability to think about all aspects of the business
    • Intellect and judgement
    • Resourceful and able to execute: Take full ownership ‘buck stops with me’ – ability to work independently and to make it happen, will do everything it takes to get it done
    • Understands how big organisations work, but is able to work in a small, agile and fast paced environment
    • Strong leadership experience in working in a matrix organisation
    • Ability to break down complex challenges into measurable work streams and to lead the delivery.
    • Good project manager that is able to coordinate multiple team efforts, track progress and report on key risks to success
    • Ability to work remotely – must be able to manage one’s time and deliver as expected, as well as get other team members to deliver while working remotely
    • Commercial experience / acumen and very strong with people.
    • A self-starter, able to work independently and collaboratively as needed, and escalate only when necessary.

    What you’ll need

    • 8-10 years plus banking and regulatory experience. MNO / Payments Tech experience a bonus. Ideally at Senior leader level of a recognised institution in East Africa
    • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent from an accredited institution of higher learning
    • A strong understanding of Mobile money platforms and related business models
    • A wide network in business and government

    Senior Data Engineer (South Africa / Kenya)

    About this job

    Our platform acquires data from millions of GSM and mobile money users from globally distributed sources. Beyond ingress, the data is processed, stored and distributed to support event-driven analytics and ML pipelines, leveraging cloud-based infrastructure. As a JUMO Data Engineer, you’ll help contribute to our mission of financial inclusion by extracting maximum predictive value from data assets.

    If you join us, you’ll

    • Design, implement, and maintain the data pipelines that constitute JUMO's data platform, enabling effective use of data across the organisation
    • Providing feedback on team members' output, encouraging skills development within the team
    • Be responsible for creating robust, mission critical batch and streaming data processing capabilities
    • Work closely with Portfolio Managers and Data Scientists to understand the real world problems we’re trying to solve
    • Mentor juniors with technical leadership
    • Be supported by senior leaders as you drive your own development

    What you’ll need

    • BSc. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or equivalent tertiary degree
    • Real-world understanding of data processing and storage
    • 2+ years experience with Data pipeline design and development experience
    • 2+ years experience in processing of data with big-data technologies such as Cassandra, DynamoDB, InfluxDB, MongoDB, Presto, Apache Spark, Hadoop, Beam, Flink, Kafka or Kinesis
    • Experience in application design and development with at least one of the following languages: Python (preferred), Scala, Java
    • RDBMS experience in any relevant technology such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, Redshift and SQL Server
    • Working knowledge of the Data product lifecycle
    • Command of productionising and monitoring of data pipeline workflows
    • Experience with relational database administration, technical architectures and infrastructure components 
    • Understanding of CI/CD practices
    • Productive within a Linux command line environment
    • Experience designing systems to process and curating large data sets
    • Proven ability to contribute software as part of a team
    • Effective communication of technical concepts
    • Critical thinking under pressure

    Bonus if you have

    • Experience working with messaging systems (RabbitMQ, SNS)
    • Experience working with data pipeline orchestration (Airflow, Nifi, Streamsets)
    • Experience working with production BI environments and tools (Tableau, Superset, Looker)
