    Research Associate I


    Key Responsibilities

    • Test field survey tools
    • Conduct household survey activities for the Eco-PPR project in Kenya such as administration of questionnaires and conducting of participatory interviews
    • Handle data and conduct primary data analysis
    • Contribute to project area reports and datasets
    • Provide logistical support during field surveys
    • Perform any other related duties as may be required

    Requirements

    • Bachelor of Arts degree or Diploma in Community Development, Business Administration, Sociology or Socioeconomics
    • One-year relevant experience with degree or three years relevant experience with diploma
    • Experience working with household survey tools such as questionnaires and participatory data collection methods
    • Knowledge and experience working with communities in rural areas will be an added advantage
    • Experience in simple data analysis and report writing preferred
    • Experience in gender studies will be an added advantage

    This position is at job level HG 10 and it is only open to Kenyan nationals. The position on a 1-year fixed term contract. ILRI offers a competitive salary and benefits package which includes; pension, medical and other insurances

    Research Associate II

    Key Responsibilities

    • Conduct field sample handling and processing
    • Conduct serological and molecular diagnosis of Peste des Petits Ruminants
    • Test cell lines for PPR virus culture
    • PPR virus isolation and genotyping
    • Support training needs and participate in training of animal health laboratory technicians in project countries
    • Keep detailed records of experiments, organize data, trouble-shoot and assist in determining most suitable experimental methodologies to optimize results
    • Analyze data and present results at regular team meetings
    • Use and maintain scientific equipment/machines, reagents used in the laboratories
    • Perform any other related duties as may be required

    Requirements

    • BSc degree or Diploma in Veterinary Science, Biosciences, Biotechnology, Laboratory Technology, Biomedical technology, Clinical laboratory science, or allied health technologies
    • Two years relevant experience with degree or four years relevant experience with diploma
    • Experience in serological and molecular diagnosis
    • Experience working with scientific tests on animal blood and fluid samples
    • Knowledge and experience working with invitro cultures and performing serological and molecular assays will be an added advantage
    • Experience in data analysis and report writing preferred

    Research Associate III

    Key Responsibilities

    • Act as a point person for animal health for the field team and Eco-PPR Scientists as per IACUC protocols
    • Act as a link to Community Disease Reporters for passive surveillance and coordinate regular visits to households to monitor herd dynamics
    • Supervise animal sampling activities in the field for purposes of cross-sectional/longitudinal and pre/post vaccination surveys for disease surveillance and sero-monitoring, respectively
    • Work with local staff to identify PPR outbreak spots, and conduct outbreak investigations and collect appropriate samples and data
    • Assess training needs and participate in training of animal health technicians/students on attachment
    • Coordinate animal health activities by scheduling and directing on work to be done for each day
    • Contribute to the planning, coordination and implementation of research activities as per project plan
    • Contribute to project reports and other technical reports
    • Perform any other related duties as may be required

    Requirements

    • Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Veterinary Medicine (Kenya Veterinary Board registered veterinary surgeon)
    • Two years relevant experience with degree or five years relevant experience with diploma
    • Experience in animal handling, clinical monitoring, sampling and sample processing
    • Knowledge and experience working with small ruminants will be an added advantage
    • Experience in data analysis and report writing preferred
    • Experience in livestock disease surveillance in the field
    • Good understanding of methods, techniques and procedures
