    Research Assistant (Gastrointestinal Study Project)

    The Project

    Gastrointestinal Project is a collaborative study between Dr. Charles Darkoh (University of Texas) and Dr. Micah Oyaro (University of Nairobi) on gastrointestinal/diarrheal infections to be done at the University of Nairobi’s Department of Human Pathology. The location of the study is Nairobi.

    The Position

    The position is based in Nairobi County.

    Job Description

    The Research Assistant will be working under the supervision and guidance of the Research Coordinator.

    Job Specifications

    1. A Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences.
    2. Experience working with bacterial cultures.
    3. Ability to work according to the project work plan and schedule activities in order to successfully meet internal and external deadlines.
    4. Ability to understand and apply specified field and/or research procedures and protocols.
    5. Competencies using online meeting and project management platforms.
    6. Good interpersonal and problem–solving skills.
    7. Ability to communicate clearly, concisely and effectively.

    Terms of appointment

    This a position whose tenure is a six (6) month contract renewable based on performance and by mutual
    consent, and depending on availability of funds. The salary is negotiable depending on the level of education and work experience.

    Study Nurse (Action III Trial Project)

    The Project

    Action III Trial is a three (3) year multi-country, multi-center, three-arm, parallel group, double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized trial of two doses of antenatal corticosteroids for women with a high probability of birth in the late preterm period. The project will be conducted in three (3) hospitals in Kenya.

    The Position

    The position is based in Mombasa County.

    Job Description

    1. Screen and enroll eligible participants in the study by ensuring proper administration of consent procedures.
    2. Administer screening and enrollment questionnaire to the participants.
    3. Maintain register of all randomized participants.
    4. Ensure data is collected accurately and resolve any discrepancies with data team.
    5. Prepare weekly, monthly and quarterly reports for the study coordinator.

    Job Specifications

    1. An applicant must have Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education or its equivalent with a pass in English.
    2. He or she must have a Diploma in Kenya Registered Nurse Midwife or Kenya Registered Community Health Nurse or a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing.
    3. He or she must have at least one (1) year working experience, post qualification, in a busy maternity unit.
    4. Applicants with training and experience in research and IT will have an added advantage.

    Laboratory Technologist (Gastrointestinal Study Project)

    Job Description

    Reporting to Dr. Oyaro, the Medical Laboratory Technologist will collect samples from the patient wards, process and test them according to study protocols. He or she will also perform other duties, as assigned.

    Job Specifications

    1. At least a Bachelor of Science degree in biomedical sciences, microbiology or equivalent qualification from a recognized University.
    2. Experience in clinical research and scientific writing skills.
    3. Demonstrable laboratory-based research experience.
    4. Strong microbiology and molecular biology experience.
    5. Strong written and oral communication skills.
    6. Ability to pay attention to details.
    7. Experience working in research institutions will be an added advantage.
    8. Good computer skills including Microsoft Excel, Access, Word, Outlook, and Power Point.
    9. Familiarity with interviewing, observation, and probing skills will be an added advantage.

    Study Data Clerk (Step-Mag Trial Project)

    The Project

    The STEP-mag trial Project is a three (3) year WHO Simplified Treatment for Eclampsia Prevention using Magnesium sulfate (The STEP-Mag) that is to be conducted in three (3) hospitals in Kenya.

    The Position

    This is a full time position based in Nairobi.

    Job description

    1. Enter data on an online platform and scan the study questionnaires.
    2. Prepare new patient files and ensure all files contain the required forms.
    3. Conduct weekly data quality checks with guidance from the data manager and maintain data cleanliness.
    4. Maintain a clean log frame of data queries and how they have been resolved.

    Job specifications

    1. An applicant must have KCSE or its equivalent with a pass in English.
    2. He or she must have a diploma or degree in IT or its equivalent.
    3. He or she should have two (2) years’ experience in IT and data entry.
    4. In addition, he or she must have experience in research and data-handling environment.
    5. An applicant who has worked on an online data entry platform will have an added advantage.
