    Technician - Makueni

    What is the opportunity?

    • Reporting to the Regional Manager Makueni with guidance from the Lead Engineer. The technician is responsible for performing technical tasks within the Regional office following established standards and procedures.  The person in this position must be self-driven, a devoted Christian with a clear calling from God and a heartfelt passion for our mission. This position requires that the person resides in Makueni, Kenya, where the office is located. It also involves frequent traveling to remote locations within Kenya or surrounding countries.

    The technician will: -

    General Responsibilities:

    • Maintain a strong Christian witness and model servant leadership to colleagues, partners, the communities we serve, and the public. 

    Key Responsibilities

    The following list is meant to be a guideline:

    • Mobilize and oversee community volunteers and/or subcontractors in project preparation by constructing shallow wells, digging trenches for pipes, and constructing houses for water treatment systems.
    • Install water treatment systems including pumps, filters, chlorinators, and solar panels.
    • Install water storage tanks, piping, electrical cables, water meters, conduit, and tap stands.
    • Train system operators on the day to day running and operation of the systems, which includes daily monitoring of residual chlorine levels in treated water.
    • Supervise drilling activities, monitor quality testing and assist with borehole/spring/well yield tests.
    • Read and understand engineering drawings.
    • Perform assessments in communities, including water quality and quantity testing, survey measurements, and other aspects as may be required.
    • Provide timely project reporting, including monthly reports, assessment reports, and follow-up reports with accompanying photographs as per specific assignment guidelines.
    • Ensure quality output in the construction, plumbing, electrical and fabricated structures by giving the contractors needed direction.
    • Maintain material record at construction sites and ensure quality of all material arrived on all sites.
    • Timely support completed projects by attending to system operations and maintenance related issues.
    • Comply with all the existing organizational policies and procedures.
    • Provide disaster response support and work in other countries as needed.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    What is required?

    • Alignment with Water Mission’s Statement of Faith and core values of Love, Excellence, and Integrity.
    • Fluency in written and spoken English and Swahili is required.
    • Diploma/Higher Diploma in engineering (Civil, Environmental, electrical, chemical or Electro-mechanical Engineering).
    • T1/T2 or T3 EPRA solar and NCA licenses are preferred.
    • Registered with KETRB [as Certified Engineering Technician].
    • Proven experience of at least 3 years in a technical field (preferably related to solarised Water Systems).
    • Specialized technical skills (such as plumbing, welding, electrical, or building & construction).
    • Driver’s license required-Class B.
    • Advanced skills using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and drafting programs (AutoCAD/PowerCADD, SolidWorks/ProE).
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including cross-cultural communication and the ability to clearly articulate ideas and feedback in a constructive way.
    • Excellent analytical, project planning, and management skills.
    • Thorough understanding of the Great Commandment and the Great Commission.
    • Consistent lifestyle and behaviour that bears a good witness to the Christian faith.

    Senior Technician - Makueni

    Other Responsibilities

    • Carry out installation of solar PV systems [including electrical wiring, mounting of inverters and panels,testing, installation of main switches and other standard electrical work], water pipes, water tanks, water meters and  water pumps.
    • Supervise masons, welders, plumbers and other contractors in construction of key water system components like treatment houses and solar racks.
    • Conduct troubleshooting and repair work on solar energy systems, including identifying and resolving issues related to wiring, connections, and equipment malfunctions.
    • Perform regular inspections and preventative maintenance on electrical systems, pipes, pumping system, storage and all other system equipment.
    • Act as site team-leader during installations, ensuring efficient, safe and quality work with adherence to Water Mission’s high standard of installation, best practice and regulatory requirements.
    • Ensure compliance with electrical and building codes and regulations.
    • Ensure quality output in the installations: solar [wiring of solar panels, and installation of electrical equipments], plumbing installations [pipes, water meters, valves], construction [rebar and form works, concrete works]giving the contractors needed direction.

    Community Development Officer - Makueni

    What is the opportunity?

    • The Community Development Officer will report to the Regional Manager  in Makueni. The general assignment for this position is to become completely versed with Water Mission oriented Community Development practices to be able to implement and support the communities we serve in a variety of settings and providing support for any aspect of the Mission of the organization where possible. The role will play a key function of inspiring and nurturing the communities to proactively engage the key stakeholders, including but not limited to the Safe Water Committees, government/ institutional-led agencies, other partners among others. The overall goal is to increase awareness of the need to implement sustainable, safe water solutions that positively impact the global water crisis. This position will be based in Makueni, Kenya.

    The Community Development Officer will:-

    General Responsibilities:

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Facilitate community health and hygiene programs.
    • Participate in identification and assessment of potential communities for implementation of WASH interventions
    • Partner with communities to set up Safe Water Committees and identify relevant key players in the management of Safe Water Projects. 
    • Train Safe Water Committee officials and WASH promoters on their respective roles and responsibilities. 
    • Administer accounting and reporting sheets for the communities to use ensuring compliance to sustainability guidelines.
    • Monitor and support the Safe Water Committees to ensure that they do what is expected of them for project sustainability.
    • Work closely with the technical teams to ensure all aspects of Community Development are properly addressed in project implementation.
    • Work closely with the Project Manager to prepare professional reports for donors.
    • Develop and maintain good relationships with partners and government officials including, but not limited to, the Ministry of Water, County department of Water, Sub-County Water Officers, and local Government leadership.
    • Plan, participate in, and report on project assessment, community mobilisation, WASH promotion, commissioning, and follow-ups. 
    • Continuously receive, report, and address feedback from the Safe Water Project stakeholders namely but not limited to the community and county government representatives.
    • Write monthly reports on project progress through write-ups, testimonials, and photography (follow-up, monthly summary, & RWC reports) 
    • Maintain documentation for the Safe Water Projects on existing organization platforms like Assetas and in individual project files
    • Any other duty as assigned by the immediate supervisor.

    Regional Manager - Makueni

    What is the opportunity?

    • Reporting to the Country Director in Kenya the Regional Manager Makueni will be responsible for leading the Makueni Regional Office of Water Mission Kenya (WMK), including but not limited to the following: leading, teaching, managing, and ensuring adherence to the mission, vision, values, and standards of the organization; office and project management; design, construction, operation, maintenance of water supply and sanitation systems in communities, institutions, and disaster response. This position will require residence in Makueni, Wote. 
    • As a key leader in Water Missions International Kenya, the Regional Manager Makueni is responsible for leading staff in developing a biblical worldview culture that leads to God-honoring excellence in all their work and reinforcing the following: providing accurate data, empowering staff to have the skills and mindset needed to acknowledge mistakes or problems as opportunities to find appropriate solutions, and empowering staff to consistently work for excellence in solutions that are consistent with Water Mission’s mission, vision, values, and standards.

    The Regional manager Makueni will be responsible for:

    General Responsibilities:

    • Maintain a strong Christian witness and model servant leadership to colleagues, partners, the communities we serve, and the public. 

    Other responsibilities:-

    • Study, embrace, advocate, and lead staff to understand and adhere to WMK’s mission, vision, values, and standards in all areas of office and project operations.
    • Manage the office and projects according to approved scope, schedule, and budgets.
    • Provide timely, accurate, and complete reports of office and project status as directed.
    • Work in a team environment to provide servant leadership, direction, and assistance for engineers, technicians, community development staff, administrative personnel, and volunteers to ensure best-in-class quality of output and adherence to WM/K values and standards.
    • Develop and maintain positive relationships with various government offices to influence and share best practices and professionalism with the County Government of Makueni, Ministry of Water & Sanitation and Irrigation (MOWSI), Ministry of Health (MOH), and other offices within the vision and values of the organization.
    • Prepare written proposals and cost estimates.
    • Manage multiple simultaneous projects in different locations.
    • Maintain good communications with WMK staff and partner organizations.
    • Ensure that each portion of the work is executed according to an agreed-upon Scope of Work, design, schedule, and budget to a best-in-class level of excellence.
    • Provide training to WMK staff and those of other organizations regarding maintenance, operation, organization procedures, and sustainability of implemented solutions.
    • Approve program and project related expenses and purchase orders in accordance with WMK policies and procedures.
    • Approve the allocation and use of all WMK Makueni Regional office vehicles and equipment and ensure that these are operated by approved personnel only.
    • Conduct field inspections and site assessments to ensure that construction/implementation is in accordance with plans and expectations.
    • Participate in disaster response activities as needed.
    • Prepare and make presentations to the Operations Team, Strategic Partners, donors and volunteers.
    • Oversee technical and WASH project design. Ensure project management and Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) tools are maintained in a timely manner.
    • Abide by the policies and requirements of the WMK Code of Conduct and Staff Policy Manual
    • Other tasks as may be assigned.

    • 7+ years of progressive project and people management
    • 2+ years working in development NGOs at managerial level.

    • Good written and verbal cross-cultural communication skills. This includes proposal writing, report writing, operational organization, and presentation skills.

    • Ability and willingness to travel in-country for up to four weeks per year. Most in-country trips require this person to travel by long car rides on rough terrain and stand for extended periods of time in hot weather.
