    Senior Manager, People and Culture

    Position Summary

    This newly established position of Senior Manager, People and Culture ( SMPC) is part of AWF’s global people team and will provide strategic and operational support to AWF leaders and employees on all generalist HR functions across the organization in a highly client-focused manner . The position will focus on Africa, UK and Switzerland and provide backstopping support to AWF’s operations in the US. The incumbent will be responsible for the development and implementation of human capital initiatives, policies and procedures, influencing positive culture changes, managing compensation and benefits, leading learning and development, performance management, compliance, payroll, database management etc. The Senior Manager, People and Culture will ensure a consistently high level of customer service being delivered to internal and external constituents. The SMPC will also provide people operational oversight and support to AWF’ country and field offices . This position will supervise the Senior Officer, People and Culture and People and Culture Officer, Central and West Africa. This position will be based in Nairobi, Kenya and will report to the Senior Director, People and Culture.

    Responsibilities

    Operational oversight

    • Oversee day to day management of the Human Resources team in Africa
    • Ensure that staff queries and issues are logged and addressed timely
    • Collect and organize ongoing departmental workflow, assigning tasks and setting deadlines within the HR team in Africa
    • Generate reports for Senior Director, People and Culture per agreed schedules

    Knowledge Management

    • Maintain an organized inventory of human resources related policies, procedures and templates (HR toolkit). Ensures the HR toolkit is current, well documented, adequately distributed, and fitting with organizational norms and industry best-practices. Recommend and draft new elements of the HR toolkit as needed.
    • Ensure that all employee documents are filed and up to date in the HRIS system and related databases
    • Participate in implementation and adoption of the HRIS system. Monitor usage and ensure quality control over data contained within the HRIS system. Ensure that all employee databases (Unanet, SharePoint, payroll, accounting, email lists, etc.) are reconciled regularly to the HRIS data.
    • Support the provision of HR metrics and ensure all reporting and compliance requirements are met.
    • Serve as an administrator of key systems currently including AWF’s case management/reporting tool, ( NAVEX Activpayroll (Activ8), HireRight, Aviva, Utmost Worldwide and Globalization Partners.
    • In collaboration with Knowledge management department, ensure that policies and related information are accessible and signed off by staff on an ongoing basis
    • Ensure that all legal documents, benefits policies, summaries, and schedules are regularly reviewed, updated, and made available to staff
    • Ensure all organizational charts are up to date and available to staff

    Employment Lifecycle Implementation

    • Oversee and participate in recruitments, including as needed the development and review of Job Descriptions, advertisements, short-lists, interview panels, offer letters and contracts.
    • Ensure fair and consistent application of salaries and negotiate compensation for new hires
    • Ensure timely generation of employment contracts, including new contracts, amendments, and renewals.
    • Ensure that new staff members are properly oriented to AWF practices and culture.
    • Ensure statutory probationary timelines are adhered to in accordance with local laws.
    • Ensure new staff are set up on HRIS, added on medical benefits and enrolled on Retirement benefits upon eligibility.
    • Administer employee benefit programs for all African and UK offices. Coordinate annual review and (as needed and in consultation with the procurement department) rebid of benefits plans with vendors.
    • Support line manager in coordination of all staff meetings and HQ biweekly meetings
    • Periodically check in with Landscape Managers, Country Directors, and other supervisors to proactively deliver HR services.
    • Oversee the staff offboarding and ensure compliance with internal and statutory provisions while minimizing stress to separating staff
    • Oversee sharing of the payroll inputs by supervisees Officers, Program Finance and Administration Officers and international payroll providers. Work with the Compliance department on ensuring statutory compliance.
    • Coordinate and serve as point person for AWFs Employer on Record for Europe

    Learning and Development

    • Conduct Training Needs Analysis using both structured and unstructured methods to capture requirements across the organization; identify current and future developmental needs at the individual level that support career progression, and capacity building requirements at the institutional level;
    • Conceptualize and implement innovative and flexible methods to address the developmental and capacity building needs identified, including identification of external training programs and conferences, the design and delivery of in-house training sessions, enrollment in online learning programs, mentoring, self-learning, and other methods as appropriate;
    • Develop a comprehensive Learning and Development Plan based on the developmental needs and methods identified;
    • Drive and facilitate the implementation of the Learning and Development Plan to ensure smooth execution with effective outcomes; providing thought leadership around program design and delivery;
    • Monitor and evaluate the different methods used; continuously improving the approach, process and methods as appropriate;
    • Organize and oversee the New Hire onboarding programmes to help new hires settle in well and quickly
    • Oversee the internship program and in collaboration with other teams support other learning programs e.g. Youth Fellowship Program
    • Refine existing systems and processes, and set up new processes as required, including: preparing and tracking the annual learning and development Budget; creating and updating the Training Calendar; tracking training attendance; capturing feedback on training programs as well as conferences and workshops attended
    • In Co-lead the redesign and establishment of an appropriate curricula of the Conservation Management and Leadership Program (CLMP) and coordinate the day to day aspects of the program
    • Coordinate the development, delivery and evaluation of a suite of management and leadership development programs
    • Plan and assess the 'return on investment' of any training or development programme Implement and administer regular staff surveys to get feedback on the development programs and discuss plans with managers
    • Contribute to the review of learning and development policies and ensure they are aligned to the realities and best practices
    • Collaborate with HR team on suggested training needs per individual departments across countries
    • Guide managers to formulate individual learning plans
    • Contribute to the design and implementation of succession plans

    Culture

    • Participate in the design and implementation of programs for full employee engagement and participation
    • Support the staff committee and participate in the change management process
    • Support in the roll out and promotion of AWF’s values, principles, and culture within and outside of AWF
    • Participate in and implement initiatives to identify and improve business processes

    Other

    • Perform other relevant duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, human resources, or Social sciences. Masters degree is an advantage
    • At least 10+ years of progressive HR experience. 5 years in responsible positions in Human Resource Management
    • Member of IHRM,CHRP qualification desired
    • Ability to recruit, manage and motivate a professional team
    • Proven experience recruiting internationally for highly technical positions
    • Demonstrated success implementing staff onboarding, learning and development programs, and performance assessment systems.
    • Project management experience
    • Strategic about achieving objectives; ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously with excellent follow through and attention to detail
    • Willingness to work flexible hours to support a global organization
    • Ability to travel occasionally sometimes to very remote and physically challenging locations
    • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with ability to prepare and clearly present information to multiple audiences and a keen editing eye; comfortable communicating with a variety of audiences, including senior leadership
    • Ability to exercise sound judgment and the highest level of discretion
    • Adherence to high professional and ethical standards, and will represent the African Wildlife Foundation with the utmost respect

    Writer & Edit Associate

    Position Summary

    Are you a careful and engaging writer adept at translating sometimes complicated concepts into compelling feature articles and other content appropriate for global audiences? Can you put yourself in readers’ shoes and inspire them to read further and act? Are you exacting about factual accuracy? Do you have a keen editorial eye? Most importantly, do you care about the future of wildlife? The African Wildlife Foundation is seeking an enthusiastic and qualified candidate to support our publications and other print marketing efforts to help further AWF’s position as Africa’s conservation leader.

    The position holder will play a key role in developing content for AWF publications, focusing on writing original stories, copyediting others’ stories, proofreading, and supporting the editor in a variety of editorial/project management tasks such as running articles through approval processes. She/he goal will be to help ensure the breadth and impacts of AWF’s work are communicated to important audiences, including members and major donors.

    Responsibilities

    • Conceptualize, research, and write feature articles, news briefs, evergreen content, historical features, and other content for key AWF publications
    • Review and edit articles, news stories and other content submitted by the organization’s stakeholders with an eye for accuracy, audience appeal, and adherence to editorial and brand guidelines
    • Liaise regularly with field and program staff members to keep abreast of important organizational news, especially related to conservation impacts, successes, and challenges.
    • Participate in developing ideas for print products including books that will serve AWF’s Strategic Vision 2020-2030 and support the Marketing & Creative team’s goals and objectives
    • Support proofread materials generated by Marketing & Creative as well as AWF staff members at large
    • Help plan and maintain publication calendars and production schedules to ensure adherence to timelines and quarterly goals
    • Help ensure brand fidelity of and consistency in all materials
    • Support print production project management
    • Other duties as assigned

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree with at least two years of experience
    • Excellent writing, copyediting, and proofreading skills
    • Demonstrated commitment to accuracy and editorial quality
    • Strong research skills and ability to translate complex ideas and issues into easily understood messages
    • Ability to manage multiple projects while adhering to deadlines
    • Willingness to pitch in on a variety of tasks as part of a dedicated team
    • Ability to develop creative ideas for new print products that fulfill strategic messaging goals and objectives
    • Keen interest or experience in Africa’s wildlife/land/people
    • Experience writing for donor audiences preferred but not required
