    Private Partnerships and Philanthropy Officer (Social Impact)

    Terms of Reference

    General Background     

    • The Corporate and Shared Value Partnerships team leverages the strengths of businesses on behalf of displaced persons globally. It does this on one hand by supporting UNHCR Divisions and Regional Bureaux with their corporate engagement strategies, and on the other hand by directly building and managing high-value partnerships, mostly with multi-national corporations. In the spirit of the Global Compact on Refugees, the Unit helps strengthen and expand partnerships with the private sector so as to include financial and in-kind support to UNHCR, technical knowledge, direct investment in refugee-hosting areas, product and service development, access to communications channels, advocacy, or a combination of any of the above. The Corporate and Shared Value Partnerships team serves as a center of excellence in corporate engagement by disseminating good practices and driving thought leadership around emerging concepts and practices.

    Purpose and Scope of Assignment 
         

    • Reporting to the Chief of Section PSP Africa, the incumbent will support the Bureaux and Country Operations to build Shared Value Partnerships with the African private sector with a focus on developing and managing relationships with businesses bringing social impact value (refugee employment, advocacy, probono expertise).
    • Alongside account management responsibilities, the incumbent will focus on driving the creation and institutionalization of tools, protocols, and processes that will optimize engagement with companies, business networks, and related organizations globally. In this way, s/he will contribute to increasing UNHCR’s profile and credibility as a partner that can deliver impact and breakthrough solutions at scale through partnerships. S/he will ensure that all collaborations are developed and managed in accordance with UNHCR procedures as well as UN and industry good practices. S/he will pay special attention to ensure that partnerships are initiated and developed in a proactive and collaborative manner, based on established needs and priorities as well as partners’ interests. S/he will facilitate the efficient and streamlined sharing of information on these collaborations among internal stakeholders, particularly the PSP network.
    • Collaboration with a broad range of stakeholders is vital to success in this role. The incumbent must establish effective working relationships internally with key staff across the organization, and externally with private sector counterparts.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Work closely with the PPH corporate and Foundations teams, to engage corporate/ foundations and set strategic directions for all activities relevant to the acquisition and strengthening of partnerships and relationships with them, ensuring that a dynamic pipeline that includes shared value initiatives is in place and regularly assessed and updated.
    • Nurture, develop, and oversee existing relationships which are part of the incumbent’s portfolio, and ensure that they are leveraged to their full potential, and donor requirements are fulfilled while assessing the continued benefit of the partnership(s) to UNHCR.
    • Define Key Performance Indicators for relationships and partnerships with corporate/ foundations, in line with PSP Africa and Global Organisational Strategic Frameworks, and perform strategic analyses and provide insight into the delivery and management of partnerships.
    • Ensure that records on relationships are accurate and up to date on Salesforce and capture all relevant information and communications with donors.
    • Regularly coordinate with colleagues in UNHCR HQ, PPH and shared value team, and other PSP offices to identify potential areas of collaboration and find opportunities for synergies.

    Corporates

    • Working closely with PPH Corporate team to build partnerships with corporates and corporate foundations, identify clear impact frameworks for engagement.
    • Working closely with PPH Corporate team, design and implement shared value initiatives and materials for corporate audiences; prepare and deliver pitches, briefings, and presentations which communicate to corporate partners, and represent, in an accurate, timely, and persuasive manner, relevant information on UNHCR’s programs and activities.
    • Manage a select portfolio of corporate partnerships and develop and lead on cultivation and stewardship plans to ensure that their competencies are leveraged for the benefit of UNHCR and persons of concern, that the partnership is achieving its full potential, and that that corporate partner can access partnership benefits in line with UNHCR’s benefits matrix.
    • If applicable, work with the PPH team to identify opportunities for financial engagement with potential and existing shared value corporate partners.
    • Be responsible for the delivery of relevant, accurate, and timely information and reports to partners on UNHCR’s programs and activities including on-time reporting of the impact of their contributions.
    • Ensure that shared value partnerships case studies and materials are recorded and disseminated for learning and internal communications purposes.
    • Work in collaboration with PPH Corporate team to develop cases for support of for social impact partnerships and develop materials for external presentation.
    • Develop a social impact strategy to engage corporations and corporate foundations, in line with the PSP Global Strategy and the PPH Strategic Framework ; and input to the organizational shared-value strategy. 
    • Perform other related duties as required.

    Qualifications and Experience

    Education:     

    • University degree (BA/BSc) in Public Relations, Political Science, Communication, Business Administration, or other related fields.


    Work Experience 

    Essential Minimum Qualifications and Professional Experience Required

    • Minimum 6 years relevant work experience with a relevant Undergraduate, or 5 years relevant work experience with a relevant master’s degree.
    • Work experience in the corporate sector and/or the not-for-profit sector on corporate partnerships.
    • Demonstrated familiarity with the work of UNHCR and experience in building and managing impactful private sector partnerships on behalf of a UN entity or not-for-profit organization, including financial and non-financial collaboration; or experience managing collaborations or projects with non-profit organizations on behalf of a company, foundation, or other philanthropic vehicles.
    • Proven experience in strategy development, policy, and process development. 
    • Proven ability to think conceptually and critically, and to find, synthesize and interpret large amounts of information.
    • Strong result-oriented and service-oriented attitude.

    Essential

    • Relevant professional experience in private sector fundraising and/or partnerships and/or managing relationships with donors and/or external partners, with exposure to an international environment and/or with humanitarian organizations.
    • Possess expertise and up-to-date knowledge of existing and new fundraising/partnership management techniques, and of major trends in the philanthropic landscape.
    • Experience in project management, with a proven track record of successfully implementing plans requiring expert knowledge at times.
    • Proven ability to keep track of performance and meet or exceed targets.
    • Ability to establish and implement strategies and plans according to priorities, manage, and mitigate risks, and balance different and sometimes competing needs and interests.
    • Experience in managing and coordinating between multiple stakeholders, with an ability to multi-task, manage time, keep with tight deadlines, and thrive in a high-pressure environment.
    • Ability to produce high-quality written materials tailored to specific audiences.

    Desirable

    • Experience in starting up and/or managing private sector partnerships and/or individual donor relationships in new and/or challenging markets.
    • Experience in a UN field location and/or in a developing country.

    • Knowledge of and experience in a specialized area of fundraising, such as legacies, planned giving, or cause-related marketing;

    Senior External Relations Assistant (Temporary Appointment)

    Organizational Setting and Work Relationships

    • The Senior External Relations Assistant normally functions under the direct supervision of External Relations Officer or another professional staff depending on staffing structure of the Office. The incumbent assists in the management of external relations activities of the Office. He/she plays a key role in organising the visits of foreign delegations, donors, press and media, providing regular briefings and drafting reports/materials for external partners. He/she may also receive advice and operational support from the External Relations/Public Information Units at the Country Office /HQ.

    Assistant External Relations Officer (Temporary Appointment)

    • The incumbent is closely supervised on issues concerning external relations and public information by the External Relations Officer or the Representative who gives regular guidance and advice to the incumbent.     Interpreter

    Terms of Reference

    Intern - Kenya Marshall Plan Development

    Terms of Reference

    BACKGROUND INFORMATION

    • United Nations High Commission for Refugees, the UN Refugee Agency, intends to onboard an intern to support the development of the Marshal Plan. The intern will support the Joint Secretariat between UNHCR and the Government of Kenya (GoK) - Department for Refugee Services (DRS) as part of a multi-functional team working on the Marshall Plan. It is expected that the intern will enhance and streamline communication and reporting initiatives, support with the logistical coordination and preparations. UNHCR will provide the intern with a learning opportunity to gain knowledge and practical experience related to their academic programme or future work in a field related to UNHCR’s mission. The intern will also benefit from mentoring and gain valuable UN work experience. 


    OPERATIONAL CONTEXT

    • Kenya has hosted refugees and asylum seekers for decades. The country remains the fifth largest refugee-hosting country in Africa and the thirteenth largest asylum country in the world, with about 600,000 registered refugees and asylum-seekers as of 30 April 2023, along with more than 123,000 asylum-seekers in Dadaab who have been profiled pending formal registration by the Government. The vast majority reside in the camps, in Dadaab and Kakuma, with a proportional number residing in Nairobi and other urban areas. The unstable political and security situation in several countries across the region, together with the devastating drought affecting much of the Horn of Africa, has continued to bring significant displacement into Kenya, with more than 36,000 new arrivals registered in 2022 along with an estimated 67,600 individuals who were profiled pending registration. 
    • Kenya enacted the Refugees Act, 2021, which came into force in February 2022. The Act provides new and additional opportunities, rights, protection, and solutions for refugees in Kenya, including by recognizing the contributions made by refugees to Kenya’s development and providing refugees with access to documentation to facilitate employment and the establishment of small businesses. The Act demonstrates the continuing commitment of the Government towards ensuring the protection of refugees and asylum-seekers and to finding lasting solutions to their problems. Further, the Act is in line with Kenya’s commitments under the CRRF and the Global Compact on Refugees (GCR). Development of Refugee Regulations to guide the implementation of the Act is at an advanced stage.
    • Government of Kenya has stated its intention to transition from camps to integrated settlements under a Plan to be developed, which has been termed the Marshall Plan. 

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Under the direct supervision of the Associate Government Liaison Officer and the overall guidance of the Marshal Plan Secretariat, the incumbent will perform the following substantive duties:
    • Support communication activities highlighting the work on the development of the Marshal Plan;
    • Work proactively with the Secretariat to share correspondences and feedback to and from the stakeholders engaged in the development of the Marshal Plan;
    • Work closely with UNHCR Admin and Supply Units to provide logistical arrangements in support of the Secretariat and other structures engaged in the development of the Marshal Plan;
    • Attend official meetings, workshops and other events and contribute to the preparation and dissemination of outcome documents.
    • Assist in creating and developing briefing notes, presentations, infographics and tables on the Marshal Plan;
    • Assist with content updates for the Marshal Plan to increase visibility of the process and interactions in the social media platforms;
    • Perform other work-related duties as required.

    ESSENTIAL MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    • The candidate for the Internship Programme will be selected on a competitive basis. The following minimum qualifications are required:
