    Research Officer II - Nematology Project

    Overall Purpose of the Job

    Conduct research on various nematology aspects and capacity building on PhD, Masters and students on attachment and internships.

    Specific Duties

    • Carrying out field, greenhouse trials and laboratory experiments.
    • Sampling, sample processing and nematodes identification.
    • Capacity Building; Training academic staff (University) and partners in NEMEDUSSA project and others, preparation of training materials.
    • Publishing research results in peer reviewed journals and documenting research work.
    • Induction of new students and interns.
    • Supervising casual workers.
    • Maintaining nematodes culture in the lab and green house.
    • Organising nematology journal club meetings.
    • Ensuring that the laboratory equipment is well calibrated and maintained.
    • Preparation for nematode courses both materials and training.

    Requirements/Qualifications

    • Bachelor of Science in a relevant area.
    • Master’s degree is an added advantage.
    • At least 4 years of work experience in research activities
    • Skills in Nematology techniques.
    • Publication skills.
    • Skills in sampling for nematodes and sample processing.
    • Ability to quantify and identify nematodes to genus level.
    • Skills in data collection and analysis, keeping records.
    • Information management through collating and filing of reports as well as drafting technical reports.

    Other Desirable Attributes

    • Ability to work with minimum supervision.
    • Timely delivery of expected outputs.
    • Ability to train and supervise new students and interns on nematology techniques.
    • Knowledge and skills in molecular tools.
    • Ability to use MS office computer packages.
    • Knowledge of different nematology techniques.
    • Culturing nematodes in the screen house.
    • Extraction and identification of different plant parasitic nematodes in the laboratory environment using morphological features.
    • Technical expertise in designing and conducting an experiment successfully.
    • Tabulating, summarizing data and interpretation of results.
    • Training skills for students, new staff and partners

    Junior Research Assistant - Nematology Project

    Overall Purpose of the Job

    Plant propagation and maintaining plants for research trials outdoors and in the greenhouse. Maintaining cleanliness in the greenhouse, extraction room and all the rooms related to nematode research. Assisting in initiation and completion of research trials.

    Specific Duties

    • Maintaining cleanliness in the greenhouse, extraction room and all the rooms in nematode research.
    • Responsible for planting and watering plants for experiments and nematode cultures.
    • Assist in maintaining mites’ colonies for research purposes.
    • Sterilizing, mixing and potting soil for experiments.
    • Assisting to organize, clean and pack/ store field material/ laboratory and field coats for field work.
    • Assist in preparation of samples for nematode analysis and nematode extraction.

    Requirements/Qualifications

    • High school KCSE.
    • Training in Basic Agriculture.
    • IPM training will be an added advantage.
    • Basic Agricultural training and plant husbandly skills required.
    • Basic computer skills.
    • Ability to take care of plants and work in the greenhouse.
    • Basic Nematological techniques.

    Other Desirable Attributes

    • Plants to be provided for experiments on timely basis and greenhouse maintained in good condition.
    • Sterile soil to be available for experiments through continuous sterilizing
