  • The Geothermal Development Company (GDC) is fully government-owned company in Kenya's energy sector. GDC was formed in 2008 as a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to accelerate the development of geothermal resources in Kenya. GDC is tasked with developing steam fields and selling geothermal steam for electricity generation to KenGen and to private investors. Geothermal steam is an environmentally friendly and abundant raw material used for generating electricity. The government and several development partners have been financing risks associated with geothermal exploration and drilling.

    Manager - Geothermal Resource Management

       Job Summary

    • The job holder is responsible for exploration, development, and management of geothermal reservoirs to avail steam to power producers sustainably.

    Job Specification

    Duties and responsibilities will entail: -

    • Providing leadership in the development and implementation of geothermal development strategies including development of departmental workplans and budgets.
    • Developing policies and procedures to achieve the company’s strategic objective in the management of reservoirs and steam fields.
    • Providing leadership and ensuring efficient and effective management of staff and resources.
    • Facilitating planning and implementation of geoscientific surface exploration and heat flow measurements of geothermal fields
    • Coordinating the process of identification and ranking of geothermal prospects.
    • Spearheading well siting and targeting processes, and monitoring the drilling process
    • Implementing and managing steam gathering system and steam supply contracts to ensure quality steam delivery to the power plants.
    • Ensuring execution of well-testing processes, reservoir and steam field performance and monitoring programmes, and reinjection strategies for optimal performance.
    • Facilitating and approving geothermal resource assessments and modelling.
    •  In-charge of contracts for construction of steam piping and fluid collection and reinjection systems, power plants, well intervention and feasibility studies.
    • Responsible for design, fabrication, and maintenance of resource assessment and management equipment to ensure efficiency of reservoir, steam field and power plant operations and management.
    • Ensuring efficient use of steam through accurate metering and audit of steam supply system.
    • Reviewing and recommending research in improvement/ standardization of geothermal well testing procedures, modelling, and utilization.
    • Effectively managing the capacity building and career development of internal expertise/experts.
    • Facilitating scientific/reservoir engineering innovations and consultancy services in liaison with the mandated Department.

    Person Specifications

    For appointment to this grade, an officer must have:

    • A minimum of twelve (12) years of relevant work experience four (4) years must be in Supervision role.
    • Master’s degree in: - Earth/Geological Science, Geology, Geochemistry, Geothermal Technology, or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution
    • Bachelor’s degree in: - Earth/Geological Science, Geology, Chemistry, geochemistry, Physics, or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution
    • Post Graduate Diploma in Geothermal Energy Technology or an equivalent from a recognized institution.
    • Management course lasting not less four (4) weeks (cumulative)
    • Be a member of Geothermal Association of Kenya (GAK) or any relevant professional body/association.
    • Proficiency in computer applications
    • Fulfilled the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya

    The job holder is responsible for the management of Hospitality Services, Front Office, Registry & Records, Utility Services, and related Outsourced Services.

    Job Specification

    Duties and responsibilities will entail: -

    • Corporate Records Management

    Principal Legal Services Officer

    Job Summary

    The job holder is responsible for assisting the Legal Services Manager by providing technical legal leadership in the preparation, drafting, vetting, and negotiation of contracts, company loan documents, leases, and other formal agreements between GDC and various stakeholders. The role also ensures comprehensive and cost-effective insurance of company assets and personnel, and provides legal advice to the organization.

    Duties and responsibilities:

    • Assisting in reviewing of complex, sensitive and high-risk legal matters in order to determine which cases pose the greatest threat to the security of the Company.
    • Providing legal advice and assistance as necessary.
    • Assisting in ensuring that the Company’s insurance portfolio is run in the most cost-effective manner.
    • Spearheading debt collection from staff who is no longer engaged with the company.
    • Ensuring that the preparation, drafting and the negotiation of contracts, leases, formal agreements and other legal instruments between the Geothermal Development Company and other parties are done in the Organization’s  Best interest.
    • Monitoring developments in legal research, participate in outreach programs to strengthen corporate governance and improve the quality-of-service delivery.
    • Drafting legal documents, interpret and implement laws and rulings including government policies and regulations.
    • Assisting in establishing and maintaining contractual agreements with appointed external legal counsel.
    • Gathering evidence in cases involving Geothermal Development Company to establish and verify basis for legal proceedings to formulate legal defence or to initiate legal action.
    • Conducting legal research, develop concept papers, prepare legal briefs and opinions as well as develop effective defence strategies, arguments, and testimony in preparation for legal proceedings.
    • Assessing staff performance, identify training needs, as well as design and implement training programmes to equip staff with appropriate job Competencies to improve service delivery.
    • Ensuring complete and accurate company records in compliance with the requirements of the Companies Act; and
    • Liaising with Attorney General’s Chambers, Registrar General, law enforcement agencies and stakeholders throughout the country in connection with prosecution of offenders and to develop and advance criminal cases when the violation warrants more severe action.

    Job Specifications

    • A minimum period of eight (8) years relevant work experience, three (3) of which must have been in a supervisory role.
    • Master’s degree in a relevant field from a recognized institution.
    • Bachelor of Laws degree from a recognized institution.
    • Supervisory course lasting not less than two (2) weeks.
    • Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Studies from the Council of Legal Education.
    • Advocate of the High Court of Kenya.
    • Membership to relevant professional body – LSK and ICPS (K).

    Principal Insurance Officer

     Job Summary

    The job holder is responsible for providing technical leadership in the management of the company’s insurance programme and ensures effective handling of insurance policies, claims, and compliance matters.

    Duties and Responsibilities: 

    • Supervising the development of sound insurance and regulatory affairs policies and procedures.
    • Providing technical guidance on the development and implementation of policies, procedures and strategies to ensure the company complies with applicable regulations, and in tandem with changing government and industry legislation.
    • Ensuring that all necessary licensing, filings, certifications, and permits are duly obtained and monitored to always ensure compliance.
    • Organizing the company’s insurance portfolio and provide quarterly reports on each policy, pertinent issues relating to each policy, claims lodged documentation status, expected settlement.
    • Providing technical guidance in the Company’s insurance program.
    • Coordinating and guide on the preparation of insurance proposals.
    •  Supervising research and reviews on existing laws that impact on the company’s score functions.
    •  Ensuring follow up and closing Insurance Claims Prepare insurance procurement plan and insurance tender documents in liaison with the procurement department.
    • Verifying policy documents to confirm GDC requirements are met, peruse risk notes and brokers’ reports, and vet all insurance payments.
    • Liaising with heads of departments on claims documentation on company claims and with staff-on-staff personal injury claims.
    • Coordinating with external consultants’ risk surveys and insurance claims investigations.
    • Managing all insurance policies/ contracts; effectively manage claims files for expedited settlement of claims.
    • Monitoring insurance budget performance and advise on the same; and
    • Employee performance management through target setting, monitoring, and appraisal.

    Job Specifications

    • A minimum period of eight (8) years relevant work experience, three (3) of which must have been in supervisory role. 
    • Master’s Degree in a relevant field from a recognized institution.
    • Bachelor of Commerce (Insurance), Social Science or equivalent from a recognized institution.
    • Supervisory course lasting not less than two (2) weeks.
    •  Membership of IIPK/SCII or any other relevant body
    • Proficiency in computer applications; and
    •  Fulfilled the requirements of Chapter Six (6) of the Constitution of Kenya.
