    Programme Assistant - Communications (PDMU)

    Task description

    Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of Head of Unit, Programme Delivery and Management Unit, work as part of the Law Division team and also interact on a regular basis with other Divisions and Offices that contribute to the Environmental Governance sub-programme or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UNV Head of Unit, Programme Delivery and Management Unit will:

    • Contribute to effective outreach and communication for the Law Division, the Communications Division, and other offices within UNEP that work on Environmental Governance, by providing written and other inputs for the various outreach materials, including the website, pamphlets, exhibitions and posters if relevant;
    • Write and disseminate quarterly and annual reports to both internal and external stakeholders on the progress of the Law Division’s work in enhancing environmental governance;
    • Promote content such as publications, events and campaigns on social media channels, emails and other available official and non-official outreach venues;
    • Update, maintain and gather contacts for the Law Division’s mailing list;
    • Update and maintain content on the Environmental Governance Sub-programme’s website including stories, videos, banner pictures and publications/information materials, with guidance from the Head of Unit and project managers;
    • Contribute to knowledge management in UNEP by uploading publications, meeting documents and other relevant information materials on the organization’s repository;
    • Develop monthly Environmental Governance related stories and share with relevant internal and external stakeholders;
    • Design, redesign and update communication and outreach materials for the Division, such as brochures, publications, factsheets and banners using readily available tools such as Adobe InDesign;
    • Help with the organization of and participation in relevant meetings, including global meetings such as the UNEA and develop content such as stories and picture database;
    • Organize and coordinate exhibition of Law Division’s products and services during global meetings such as UNEA, and support social media monitoring of our content and prepare analysis of the same:
    • Create and analyze surveys for the Division as well as upon requests from project managers;
    • Manages updates and further develops internal databases, update website, generates a variety of standard and non-standard statistical and other reports from various databases.
    • Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor. Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers programme mandate within their assignment and promote voluntary action through engagement with communities in the course of their work. As such, UN Volunteers should dedicate a part of their working time to some of the following suggested activities:
    • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day);
    • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
    • Provide annual and end of assignment self-reports on UN Volunteer actions, results and opportunities.
    • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
    • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly arrived UN Volunteers;
    • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

    Age: 27 - 80

    Nationality

    Candidate must be a national or legal resident of the country of assignment.

    Requirements

    Required experience

    • 3 years of experience in public communications, web content management system, production of content for websites, data analytics, or related field at the national and/or international level is required; or other relevant programmes;
    • Experience with conducting research, analysis on subject matter as well as results-based management is an asset and highly desirable, as is experience working in the UN or other international development organization;
    • Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills;
    • Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing;
    • Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development;
    • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel;
    • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment;
    • Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines;
    • Sound security awareness;
    • Have affinity with or interest in Environment, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System.

    Required education level

    • Bachelor degree or equivalent in marine sciences, environmental studies specialising in marine and coastal environment or discipline related to the work of marine biology and/or coastal ecosystems, or related area A Post-graduate university degree is desirable.
    • Additional technical training in marine science is desirable.
