    Staple Crops Technical Director

    Position Summary and Primary Responsibilities:

    The Staple Crops Technical Director will support the overarching technical approach for staple crops activities. Specifically, this position will coordinate and manage all program activities related to crops markets systems from farmer productivity to local and international market opportunities. The program is expected to take a market facilitative approach, working through market systems actors. It is also expected that the program will emphasize household consumption of nutrition foods as part of the overall strategy.   This individual is expected to coordinate with the project senior management to integrate and coordinate activities relating to diversified crop production and post-harvest handling and its link to markets, employment, and nutritious food production.  

     

    Technical

    • Lead the start-up, implementation, monitoring and adaptation of staple crops activities to increase productivity and market access, and improve access to and use of nutritious food through diversification of food production.
    • Manage a team of technical staff and work with local implementing partners to achieve project deliverables.
    • Lead market system assessments and design strategies for implementation that facilitate increased private sector engagement in value chains and accomplish program goals for the benefit of farmers.
    • Build relationships with key market players to facilitate improved access to inputs and increased market opportunities for farmers.
    • Develop technical materials, in collaboration with technical advisors and possibly outside consultants, to further project activities, objectives and results.
    • Manage and oversee training in crops production for various stakeholders;
    • Train and oversee partners, agricultural extension officers and community volunteers who deliver household outreach and group training.
    • Regularly travel to field site locations to lead the start-up, manage implementation, and in coordination with M&E staff, the monitoring of project activities.
    • Oversee and contribute to the design of assessments in order to guide program design, implementation, monitoring and adaptation.

     

    Operational

    • Provide timely and accurate written and verbal reporting.
    • Contribute to project strategic planning and to well-written, focused project reports, annual implementation plans, success stories and other written products.
    • Ensure high quality project implementation, monitoring and reporting.
    • Make regular field visits to monitor project quality and collect data.
    • Collaborate with M&E staff to ensure that collection and analysis of data is accurate, rigorous and incorporated into project implementation. 
    • Coordinate with other technical leads in work planning, implementation, monitoring, reporting, and adaptation.

     

    Reporting & Supervision:

    The Staple Crops Technical Director will report to the Chief of Party.

    Required Skills and Qualifications:

    • MSc in agriculture, horticulture, crop production or a related field with 10+ years of implementation experience;
    • Minimum of 10 years of relevant field experience with an international organization in crop production programming.
    • Strong technical grasp of crop diversification techniques, environmental strategies, and natural resource management.
    • Significant knowledge of crops market systems, food security, nutrition and gender issues in Kenya.
    • Experience, knowledge and skills in improved crops production.
    • Experience in agribusiness development preferred.
    • Experience in systems strengthening, capacity building, service delivery, and quality improvement is highly desirable.
    • Demonstrated experience in project and time management.
    • Demonstrated experience in working effectively with CSOs and community-level actors, stakeholders and beneficiaries.
    • Experience applying and knowledge of the design, implementation and best practices for promoting behavior change and adoption of improved practices and technologies in agriculture and crops programming, including training of trainer activities and development of training materials.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to lead and work effectively in team situations and independently.
    • Familiarity and understanding of donor policies and procedures is a plus.
    • Excellent writing and oral communication skills in English required.

    Dairy Technical Director

Specifically, this position will coordinate and manage all program activities that support dairy producing households to sustainably increase their production and access existing and new markets for milk resulting in increased income and consumption of milk at the household level. The program is expected to take a market facilitative approach, working through market systems actors. It is also expected that the program will emphasize household consumption of nutrition foods as part of the overall strategy.   This individual is expected to coordinate with the project senior management to integrate and coordinate activities relating to dairy production and post-harvest handling and its link to markets, employment, and nutritious food production. 

     

     

    Technical

    Senior Livestock Technical Advisor

    Project Description:

    The senior livestock technical advisor will provide technical leadership and support to the assessment and design of dairy and livestock market system development projects.  The position will play a key role in pursuit of strategic new business opportunities aligned with ID’s new dairy/livestock and New Business Development strategies and ID’s overall strategic goal. This includes opportunities with USAID, USDA and potentially other funders/implementing partners.

    The initial focus of this consultancy is assessment and design of new livestock/dairy projects through 2017. There is potential for the consulting position to transition into a full-time dairy/livestock technical expert position. This role would include:

    • Driving the dairy/livestock strategy;
    • Providing technical support to field projects in implementation;
    • Supporting related strategic partnerships;
    • Collaborating on design and implementation of shared value corporate partnerships; and
    • Overall thought leadership in dairy/livestock.

    The long-term position would be contingent on performance and new funding secured.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Research/assessment of the dairy/livestock market systems in priority countries;
    • Prioritization and analysis of key economic opportunities for inclusive growth including
      • Financial modeling of on and off-farm livestock-based business opportunities
      • Economic opportunities and barriers to women and youth engagement in on and off farm business opportunities
      • Estimation of economic losses due to spoilage/waste/animal mortality
      • Evaluation of meat, milk, egg and live animal supply chains
      • Systems for quality-based payment programs
    • Identification of change agents and lead firms followed by development of partnerships; with these local/national/international public and private market actors;
    • Design of technical approaches and specific interventions to support inclusive market; development that benefits smallholder producers as well as other actors in the system, particularly climate smart approaches;
    • Identification of innovative, evidence-based approaches to dairy/livestock market; development, and potential scaling up strategies; and
    • Proposal writing in areas of technical expertise;

     

    Management of in-country consultants that may be recruited for additional technical support in new program development and existing program support.

     

    The initial consultancy might also include some limited support in areas including:

     

    • Technical backstopping of current programs. This may include:
      • Review of and input to technical manuals;
      • Participation in quarterly meetings with project staff;
      • Provide in-country technical assistance and/or develop SOW for external technical assistance; and
      • Remote and occasional in-country capacity building and training.

     

    Reporting & Supervision:

    Reports to the Director, Technical Services & Strategic Partnerships based in Washington, DC.

    Position Location: Washington D.C or Nairobi, Kenya, preferred.

     

    Required Skills and Qualifications:

    • Advanced degree in agriculture/animal science/animal health, agribusiness, agricultureeconomics, or relevant field;
    • A minimum of seven years of experience in technical assessment, design and implementation ofUSAID, USDA and other agricultural development projects in Africa;
    • Prior experience leading livestock/dairy market assessments, prioritization of interventions and project design for large-scale projects;
    • Strong understanding of private sector-led approaches to livestock/dairy market system development, preferably in Africa
    • Detailed understanding of role of livestock/dairy in household resilience, particularly in vulnerable communities;
    • Experience in building livestock or dairy service delivery systems, (genetics, veterinary, preventive animal health, and private sector services businesses) around livestock or dairy production and processing;
    • Demonstrated experience in networking with donors, government officials and the private sector;
    • Demonstrated experience in proposal development and writing;
    • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills and the ability to develop collaborative relationships;
    • Excellent verbal and written English communication skills; and
    • Must be fluent in English.

     

    Desired Skills and Qualifications:

    • Prior living and working experience in Africa;
    • Senior experience in milk/meat post-harvest and processing interventions;
    • Experience in making livestock or dairy markets and market systems sustainable at scale;
    • Experience making livestock development approaches more gender inclusive a plus;
    • Experience in fragile environments preferred
    • French a plus
    • Good sense of humor a plus
