    Fertilizer Logistics Specialist

    Job Description

Most of the world's poor are farmers, representing the largest and most uniform group of poor people in the world. One Acre Fund is a growing NGO in Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, Malawi, Zambia and Tanzania that is innovating a new way of helping farm families to achieve their full potential. Instead of giving handouts, One Acre Fund invests in farmers to generate a permanent gain in farm income. We provide farmers with a "market bundle" that includes education, finance, farm inputs and solar lights, and market access. Our program is proven impactful – every year, we weigh thousands of harvests and measure 50-100% average gain in farm income per acre. We have laser-like focus on generating better lives for the people that we serve.

We are growing quickly. In ten years, we have grown to serve over 500,000 farm families with more than 5,000 full-time field staff. Our approach has won widespread validation, winning grants from The MasterCard Foundation and Gates Foundation.

One Acre Fund is purchasing $40M worth of inputs for direct sale to over 500,000 smallholder farmers in 2017. Through distribution of these goods and innovative trainings, we produce $129 of impact per farmer, most of which can be attributed to the distribution of high quality seed and fertilizer. Access to these life-improving inputs gives farmers the resources they need to grow their way out of poverty.

We are looking for someone to lead our fertilizer logistics operations to reduce importation costs, develop strong logistics partnerships for domestic and international transport operations, and stay in front of the regulatory environment in East Africa to deliver high quality fertilizer on time, every time. In this role, you will lead a small team to improve our current fertilizer logistics services by slashing importation and transport costs, planning all logistics movements to a tee, holding transporters and clearing agents accountable to providing world class service, and preparing our systems to scale in the coming years.

Responsibilities of the Fertilizer Logistics Specialist will include:

    • Coordinate the importation, re-exports, freighting and ground transport for thousands of tons of fertilizer and agrochemicals every year.
    • Provide logistics support and guidance to country teams by building up regional supply chain knowledge and negotiating contracts.
    • Stay at the forefront of regulations and policies surrounding the delivery of fertilizer and agrochemicals throughout East and Southern Africa.
    • Build relationships with leaders in the East African logistics industry to stay at the forefront of shifts in the global industry – you know who to call no matter what clearance or transport problem arises.
    • Manage logistics supplier relationships and coordinate between suppliers and in-country teams to deliver the best service possible to the farmers we serve.
    • Oversee fertilizer loading and delivery operations in person as necessary – will involve travel to Mombasa and Dar.
    • Prevent fraud and corruption challenges along the value chain.
    • Implement standardized practices to improve efficiency, effectiveness, and customer service.
    • Ensure consistent, predictable services by tracking performance against a set of measurable and useful KPIs.
    • Create process checklists to guarantee adherence to standard operating procedures.
    • Plan fertilizer movements down to a tee at the start of each delivery cycle and communicate these movements to suppliers and internal clients.
    • Hold logistics suppliers accountable to pick up and delivery schedules through rock-solid contracts, communication channels, and supplier relationships.
    • Mentor supply chain staff to build leadership and operational skills.
    • Coach the team to identify high quality, high level suppliers and how to negotiate for best pricing and terms – especially on logistics projects.
    • Work with multi-national staff and suppliers.
    • Become familiar with One Acre Fund teams and structures to ensure your team is effectively supporting their internal clients.
    • Work closely with logistics and other internal teams to minimize delivered costs and reduce overall spend.
    • Deliver process transparency to your internal clients.

    Program Associate

    Job description

One Acre Fund is growing quickly, and they plan to at least quadruple their farmer impact in the next five years. Program Associates play a major role in driving that growth and ensuring that this growth is stable and systematic – while also adding major innovations and improvements to their program quality. This offers Program Associates a strong career opportunity: the ability to learn from a successful field operation, contribute to aggressive growth, and also make improvements to the program.

One Acre is currently seeking Program Associates for a variety of teams within One Acre Fund, including:

    • Operations
    • Their country operation teams face a classic leadership and management challenge: how to keep a large country operation growing at 40-75% per year while also making significant improvements to One Acre’s operating model. Program Associates first learn from their organization’s deep knowledge on scaling rural field programs; then, they are challenged to find new ways to stretch, grow faster, and increase their quality of service.
    • Field operations staff focus on farmer-facing services. They start as generalists, with overall responsibility for executing One Acre’s program in a region. Over time, they can continue to rise as a general leader, possibly growing to manage an entire country’s field operation. Or they may specialize, for example, in the creation and roll-out of staff development training for hundreds or even 1,000+ team members.
    • Support operations staff build the infrastructure required for growth. These teams proactively eliminate barriers to scale in a diverse range of areas – processing millions of farmer payments, communicating to farmers via tens of millions of SMS, hiring hundreds of new staff per year, and physically moving 20,000+ tons of farm inputs to thousands of drop sites. Program Associates also make steady improvements to accelerate growth – for example, setting up mobile money integration for a country.
    • Innovations
    • One Acre’s Innovations teams discover new ideas for their programs and conduct dozens of trials to test these ideas. As an organization, One Acre constantly seek to learn and improve, and their Innovations teams lead the way.
    • Product Innovations staff improve their core agricultural products or run new experiments in energy and health products. The ideas they discover may eventually scale to hundreds of thousands of households. Product Innovations staff design trials, execute trials together with thousands of farmers, synthesize trial data, and make constant revisions to the product offering. For example, One Acre Fund’s Product Innovations team is currently testing delivery of live chickens and preparing the product for full-scale rollout. One Acre Fund is also increasingly delving into energy and health, and they are currently one of the largest sellers of solar lights in Sub-Saharan Africa.
    • Scale Innovations staff seek to improve One Acre’s core operating model. By running trials with tens of thousands of farmers, they analyze targeted questions such as: does moving from a group liability loan to an individual liability loan improve repayment and customer satisfaction? Or they might investigate more radical ideas, such as setting up physical One Acre Fund shops to see if there are more efficient ways to deliver high-quality service to farmers. They try variations on their program with the goal of improving scalability, impact, and financial sustainability.
    • On a day-to-day basis, nearly all roles involve a mix of activities:
    • Understanding and solving problems: observing field operations, meeting with leaders of their field staff, running surveys, conducting desk research, analyzing KPIs, etc. Then creating simple and lasting solutions to complex problems.
    • Planning and executing large projects: identifying clear goals, creating project calendars, designing workflows, creating field tools and talking points, designing incentive systems and understanding stakeholders, following up and monitoring project execution in the field, etc.
    • Building teams: hiring staff using One Acre Fund’s unique “experiential hiring” system, mentoring key deputies, and steadily handing off responsibility to your team as you build it.
    • Communicating with other teams: working in coordination with One Acre Fund’s other teams on the ground to execute a smooth customer experience in the simplest way possible.
    • One Acre Fund has deep operational experience running rural field programs at a scale of 1,000+ full-time staff per country. Program Associates benefit from this past experience, quickly building their skill-set through immersion in their operating environment. At the same time, the main role of Program Associates is to accelerate growth and to constantly stretch and improve One Acre Funds operations. This presents an excellent career opportunity to both learn from One Acre Fund’s accumulated experience and constantly improve and enable 40%+ program growth per year.
