    Communications Designer

    Job description

    Starting February, 2018

    Position Summary

    IDEO.org Communications Designers work as a part of a multi­disciplinary team. You’ll be part graphic designer, systems thinker, and visual storyteller collaborating with other builders and thinkings across IDEO.org. You’ll bring design excellence to projects ranging from crafting beautiful storytelling for partner solutions to building up and managing solution brand and design assets. Additional example responsibilities include: Development of rough to refined prototyping of messages, services, solutions in collaboration with team and partners; Ability to quickly refine prototypes both in context and remotely; and working collaboratively with non-designers and designers alike.

    You Will

    • Collaborate with multidisciplinary design teams to develop new products, services and businesses that address a variety of poverty-related challenges—from research and prototyping through implementation support and stewardship.
    • Work on projects that spread across print, packaging, and brand identity to interactive projects for screens, devices, and space.
    • Create storytelling pieces, illustrations, presentations, and more
    • Bring both a strategic eye and a depth of craft in Communications Design to the project team
    • Bring communications inspiration into the organization, and share it with the rest of the studio via mood boards and presentations
    • Flex your collaboration skills—working with designers of all disciplines on projects
    • Create prototypes of different levels of fidelity to help determine design direction for a project
    • Contribute to IDEO.org studio culture

    You Have

    • Fluency with Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop
    • A diverse portfolio, featuring with a range of mediums from print design and presentations to iconography and illustration
    • 3+ years of professional experience
    • Strong design fundamentals (color, form, type, layout) and the ability to experiment
    • Keen attention to detail and execution in craft
    • Experience in web design and digital applications
    • Excellent communications skills and professionalism
    • The ability to thrive and multi-task in a highly energetic, fast-paced environment
    • Willing and able to travel internationally and domestically ~30% of the time

    Business Designer

    Job description

    Position Summary

    IDEO.org’s Business Designers are a part of multi-disciplinary design teams, blending business strategy and creativity— helping our partners across the developing world bring new offerings and ventures to market. With frequent trips that take you to Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East, you’ll be part design researcher, part strategist, and part operational guru, working alongside other builders and thinkers from different backgrounds.

    Business acumen is a given. Ability to execute is a must. Demonstrated passion for solving challenges facing the world’s most impoverished communities is absolutely critical.

    You Will

    • Work with organizations across the developing world to design new products, services and consumer experiences that address a variety of poverty-related challenges.
    • Guide partners through the implementation process and steward solutions to market by developing strategies, timelines, and financial models that appropriately reflect our partners’ organizational constraints and aspirations, while delivering on the needs of the end-user.
    • Ensure new offerings and ventures introduced by our partners are created with an eye towards and concrete plans for scale.
    • Design, lead, and measure experiments to gather feedback and make concepts better.
    • Support the financial and operational health of the Amplify program by participating in the creation of budgets, operational plans, and other program-level initiatives.
    • Contribute to the culture of IDEO.org.

    You Are

    • An absolute professional who leads by example, treats peers and partners with respect, and seeks and gives constructive feedback.
    • Experienced in business model design, analysis, and implementation, with a Master’s degree in business and 5+ years of industry experience.
    • Effective working in multidisciplinary teams and communicating business concepts to a wide diversity of audiences, including partners and designers from other disciplines.
    • Able to switch seamlessly between self-directed independent work and highly collaborative teamwork.

    Design Lead

    Job description

    Position Summary

    Design Leads lead multidisciplinary design teams to turn human insights into tangible products and services that improve the lives of low-income people. You may have started your career as an interaction, industrial or communications designer, but by now you’re fluent in the full design process—from research to strategy to implementation—and comfortable leading teams through it.

    Craft is a given. Leadership experience is a must. Passion for fighting global poverty is absolutely critical.

    You Will

    • Inspire great design (and get your hands dirty)
    • Champion design excellence within teams, illuminating the difference between “good” and “great” work, and inspire teams to get there
    • Set the creative and strategic direction across a variety of design challenges: interaction, product, space and service design.
    • Conduct design research in low-income communities across Asia, Africa and the United States, and move quickly into prototyping solutions at various levels of fidelity
    • Lead relationships with key partners
    • Instill confidence in the design process among our partner organizations
    • Support partners to steward the solutions we design to market
    • Communicate the story of IDEO.org’s work with partners, funders, and other stakeholders.
    • Develop and deliver progress reports, requirements, documentation and presentations.
    • Be the point person in collecting data that shows the impact of our solutions once launched
    • Guide and mentor other designers
    • Instill project teams with the confidence and discipline to explore innovative design solutions
    • Support designers to infuse their passions into projects and learn new skills
    • Be collaborative and contribute to healthy team motivation and morale, offering emotional and logistical support.

    You Have

    • 5+ years of professional experience in a design consultancy or equivalent position leading multidisciplinary design teams
    • An obsession with what design and technology can do for people.
    • Experience managing clients and partners—from early stage companies to mature organizations.
    • Solution-focused and medium-agnostic, willing to step out of your core skill set or discipline to find the correct solution to a challenge.
    • Fluency in the human-centered design process from qualitative research and synthesis to ideation, prototyping, and implementation.
    • Willing and able to travel internationally ~30% of the time.
    • Cultural sensitivity, creativity, and resourcefulness—as comfortable finding your way through a bustling market in Uganda as you are in a design studio workshop
