Position summary

To conduct routine and complex haematological, clinical chemistry, histological, serological and other laboratory procedures involving manual or automated techniques.

Medical Laboratory Technologist Job Responsibilities

• Laboratory procedures and tests
• Prepare stains, reagents, media andsolutions necessary for the performance of all laboratory tests
• Receive specimens or obtain specimens directly from patients
• Store, culture, isolate, harvest cell cultures
• Perform routine and complex laboratory procedures involving manual or automated techniques
• Participate in various QA/QC and regulatory agency activities within the assigned section, including developing and documenting QC monitors
• Induct, supervise, train new employees and interns in the department
• Undertake research, provide support to hospital staff and external researchers undertaking research
• Attend, participate in continuous education (CPD) activities e.g. in service workshops and seminars Number of CPD activities undertaken/participated in
• Ensure that there are adequate supplies of chemicals, reagents, equipment and other laboratory requirements at all times
• Ensure maintenance of stocks registers
• Ensure that expired or unusable chemicals and reagents are separated from active stock and disposed using appropriate procedures
• Contribute to the work of the various committees related to laboratory work
• Participate in the preparation of departmental work plan and budget
• Prepare individual annual work plan based on department work plan
• Using your job description and work plan and in consultation with your supervisor, continually appraise yourself and rectify any shortcomings or suggest necessary assistance

Qualifications for the Medical Laboratory Technologist Job

• Diploma in Microbiology, Medical Laboratory Technology
• Considerable knowledge of the basic principles and laboratory applications of biology, microbiology and chemistry
• Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Act 10 of 1999
• Knowledge of current laboratory facilities, methods, equipment, materials
• Knowledge of use of computers for laboratories
• Knowledge of public health laboratory laws and regulations; sanitary bacteriology regulations
