    Civil Engineer - Geographical Information System (GIS)

    Reporting to               :         General Manager – Engineering

    Terms of Employment: Contract (three years renewable based on performance)

    Job purpose

    Under the guidance of the General Manager – Engineering, the successful candidate will be responsible for performing a variety of advanced technical work related to GIS designing, implementation and enhancing GIS application, developing and administering web-based GIS applications and datasets, maps, zoning database reports related to water operations and associated assets.

    Key results Areas and Duties

    • Create, Implement, integrate and maintain GIS Applications using Arc-GIS based platforms (Arc-GIS Editor and Arc-GIS Info) in a water utility environment;
    • Create maps and graphs using Arc-GIS software or a closely related software and associated equipments in a busy water utility environment;
    • Regularly meet with GIS Application users to define and document their data needs, project requirements, required outputs or develop applications that will address their unique needs;
    • Train and develop capacities of staff deployed to the work in the GIS department under his/her supervision;
    • Take the lead role in data creation and collection including the principles and application of Global Positioning Systems (GPS);
    • Gather, analyze and integrate spatial data from staff and determine how best the information can be displayed using GIS in a water utility environment;
    • Compile geographical data from a variety of sources including Customer Identification Surveys (CIS), field observations, satellite imagery, aerial photographs and existing maps;
    • Analyze spatial data for geographic statistics to incorporate in documents and reports;
    • Draw specifications s to assist in the procurement of GIS-related equipments, software and consultancy services;
    • Assist in the budgets preparation on all GIS works, associated equipment and user needs.
    • Any other duty assigned by the Management from time to time.

     Education and Professional qualifications and Work Experience

    • Bachelor of Science – Civil Engineering/Water Engineering or its equivalent from a recognized University;
    • Must have a Diploma in Geo-Information Systems (GIS) or Land Surveying/Cartography or related course from a recognized institution;
    • Must be a member of the Engineers Registration Board (ERB) or Institute of Surveyors of Kenya (ISK)  and in good standing;
    • Must have a minimum of five (5) years’ progressive and proven experience in the use of Arc-GIS in a large water utility environment/firm;
    • Must demonstrate hands-on experience in Digital cartographic and map production skills and use of spatial Analyst extension;
    • Ability to use computers including MS Office suite (including Excel), AutoCAD and RDMS e,g Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server applications etc.

    Required skills and Competencies

    • Strong interpersonal skills.
    • Strong communication skills in English and preferably in Kiswahili.
    • Experience in couching, training GIS data application users.
    • Ability to adopt in a highly changing environment
    • Strong leadership, management and knowledge transfer skills
    • Be a team player and uphold integrity.
