    Kenya Industrial Property Institute (KIPI) is a government parastatal under the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Cooperatives. The Institute was established on 2nd May 2002 upon the coming into force of the Industrial Property Act 2001. Previously the Institute existed as Kenya Industrial Property Office (KIPO), which was established in February 1990 after enactment of the Industrial Property Act, CAP 509 of the Laws of Kenya.

    Assistant Manager, Legal Services (2 Posts)

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Reporting to the Manager, Legal Services, the Assistant Manager will be responsible for:
    • Hearing opposition and expungement proceedings and making written rulings under the provisions of the Trade Marks Act;
    • Advising the Institute on compliance with the Constitution of Kenya, the Industrial Property Act, the Trade Marks Act and other relevant national laws as well as international industrial property instruments that Kenya has acceded to or ratified;
    • Signing certificates issued under the Trade Marks Act;
    • Preparing requisite documents and attending proceedings on infringement of industrial property rights;
    • Liaising with external lawyers on court proceedings involving the Institute and other legal matters;
    • Preparing drafting instructions to amend the Trade Marks Act and the Industrial Property Act as well as the subsidiary legislation made thereunder and preparing drafting instructions for new legislation in the industrial property field;
    • Interpreting and implementing legal policies, procedures, rules and regulations;
    • Negotiating and drafting of commercial contracts and international agreements on behalf of the Institute;
    • Screening and registering technology transfer agreements and licences; and
    • Any other duty that may be assigned.

    Requirements for Appointment

    • An L.L.M Degree or a Master’s Degree in Intellectual Property or equivalent qualifications from a recognised institution;
    • An L.L.B Degree or equivalent qualifications from a recognised institution;
    • A post graduate Diploma in Law;
    • Possession of a current practising certificate;
    • Be a Certified Public Secretary;
    • Satisfactorily served in the grade of Senior Legal Officer in the Institute or a comparable position with similar responsibilities for at least 3 years;
    • A management and leadership course lasting not less than four (4) weeks; 
    • Membership to relevant professional body;
    • Computer competency; and 
    • Must meet the requirements of Chapter 6 of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010.

    • Letter of appointment to their current substantive post (where applicable);
    • Letter of appointment to their previous post (where applicable); 
    • Equating degree certificates acquired from outside the country from the Commission for University Education; and 
    • Detailed Curriculum Vitae.
