    Communication Approaches (Puppetry)

    Purpose

    The overall purpose of the Sports for Protection Project is on strengthening social inclusion, cohesion and psychosocial well-being of young people through sport related platforms. The project will broaden participation of adolescent girls, young women and boys in sports activities through engagement with community leaders and parents, training of coaches and other duty bearers, and psychosocial and life skills support to the youth.

    Through this activity, puppetry will be used to enhance awareness and knowledge on GBV through sports. The creation and use of puppets will be the means by which GBV prevention messaging through sports will be passed. In addition, through the training of AGYW and ABYM to engage in puppetry, the trainees’ artistic skills will be honed to enable them further use these skills to earn them an income in the future.

    Key Responsibilities

    Scope of consultancy

    DRC Protection Unit in Kakuma, Kenya wishes to carry out a training for AGYW and ABYM in Kakuma Refugee Camp, Kalobeyei integrated settlement and host community on puppetry. The selected consultant will use her/his expertise in puppetry to develop GBV prevention through sports content relevant to the Kakuma and Kalobeyei areas. Furthermore, through facilitation of puppetry trainings, AGYW and ABYM will learn the art through hands-on experience, a combination of the creative and performing arts, cooperation and self-expression.

    with the youth to build capacities of the targeted trainees as well as contextualizing the technique to suit the local population. This will also require the concerned consultant to advice DRC on the required training materials/items to support this activity.

    Key tasks with list of ‘key activities’, under each responsibility.

    Consultant is expected to;

    • Conduct a meeting with DRC and SfP stakeholders to be briefed of the context sporting activities in Kakuma and Kalobeyei and the program.
    • Make recommendations on how to advance /upscale puppetry as a technique in information dissemination and share unique ideas on how best to contextualize the tool to the Kakuma Camp and Kalobeyei Settlement setting.
    • Develop training materials/resources for puppetry training advising DRC on the required training materials/items to support this activity

    Methodology

    The consultant may employ the use of (but not limited to) the following methodologies while carrying out the activity:

    • Conducting literature and practical research on the Sports for Protection Toolkit.
    • Using expertise in puppetry to develop content and puppets relevant to the goal of enhancing awareness and knowledge on GBV through sports activities.
    • Frequent consultation with DRC and SfP stakeholders on the progress of the content development for review

    Key deliverables/outputs

    The consultant is expected to:

    • Develop content and puppets for use in information dissemination, and training on GBV through sports activities
    • Consult with DRC and SfP stakeholders on the appropriateness and relevance of the content developed in Kakuma and Kalobeyei ahead of the training.
    • Make recommendations on the puppetry material required for the training.
    • Facilitate a 3-day puppetry training in Kakuma for 40 AGYW and ABYM to enhance trainees understanding and knowledge of puppetry including puppetry materials
    • Share report with findings to DRC on puppetry training and provide any recommendations on how to upscale the technique or what other techniques to utilize in enhancing information dissemination on GBV

    DRC’s responsibilities

    • DRC will give remuneration in lumpsum for the consultancy which will include the content development and the consultant’s training materials, accommodation and meals.

    Reporting Arrangements

    • The consultant will report to the DRC Programme Development and Quality Manager and GBV Team Leader for the activity.

    DURATION OF ASSIGNMENT

    • The consultancy period shall be for 21-28 days. The final report should be shared with DRC within 1 week following completion of the training,

    EXPECTED PROFILE OF CONSULTANT

    The consultant must have;

    • Must have skills and experience on Puppetry targeting children, adolescents’ girls, young women and boys.
    • 3-5 years’ work-experience in facilitation and implementing Puppetry-related activities (preferably in the humanitarian context).
    • Certificate/Diploma in Theatre Practice, Theatre Making, Creative producing, design for performance or any other relevant field of study.
    • Experience of working with refugees, conflict and post-conflict communities is an added advantage.
