    Epidemiologist

    Position Summary:

    ICAP at Columbia University is seeking an experienced and qualified expert to fill the role of Epidemiologist for ICAP’s proposed CDC-funded project, Strategic Use of Surveillance and Epidemiology to Support HIV Epidemic Control in Kenya under PEPFAR (CDC-RFA-GH20-2042). Reporting to the Strategic Information (SI) Lead, the Epidemiologist will support the development, refinement, and implementation of HIV surveillance and epidemiology efforts and contribute to building sustaingable capacity at the Ministry of Health (MOH) in these domains. The position is based in Kenya.

    The position is contingent upon availability of grant funding

    Major Accountabilities:

    • Leads/supports development of surveillance, epidemiologic study and select survey protocols in collaboration with Ministry of Health and CDC
    • Supports the preparation and conduct of surveillance and survey implementation trainings, as needed
    • Collaborates with the health informatics team to improve data visualization tools for case based surveillance, including recent infection surveillance, and clinic/population based surveys
    • Collaborates with geospatial analytics and cost analysis teams to enhance analytic content of surveillance and survey reports, presentations, and publications
    • Leads/supports development and monitoring of data quality assurance measures in surveillance and survey activities
    • In collaboration with the MOH and CDC, develops and conducts activities to strengthen the capacity to design and implement epidemiologic studies as well as analyze, disseminate, and effectively use data from these studies to formulate programs and policies
    • Leads and/or assists in the generation and presentation of project reports, publications, and presentations

    Education:

    • Advanced degree in public health, with a specialization in epidemiology

    Experience, Skills, and Minimum Qualifications:

    • Proven experience with analytical and epidemiological skills ane preferably some experience in geospatial analyses and cost analyses, and strategies for capacity-building at national and sub-national levels
    • Minimum of 8 years of experience working on international public health projects either in the headquarters of an international organization or in resource-limited settings in the field
    • Minimum of 5 years of experience in conducting surveillance and survey projects
    • Ability to analyze issues, draw valid conclusions, and make recommendations; to prepare and present comprehensive statistical and narrative reports; to conduct effective presentations
    • Strong knowledge of statistical and database software, including SAS and MS Access, preferred
    • Fluent English oral and written communication skills
    • Previous experience in Sub-Saharan Africa
