General Cashier at Fairmont Hotels & Resorts

The General Cashier is responsible for managing the hotel’s daily cash handling and disbursement operations, ensuring accurate collection, verification, reconciliation, banking, and safekeeping of cash and other monetary instruments. The role supports effective financial controls, compliance with hotel procedures and local requirements, and provides operational support to Front Office and Food & Beverage teams to ensure efficient and accountable cash management.

Key Responsibilities

• Own the daily cash control process, ensuring all cash, cheques, credit card vouchers, and remittances are accurately collected, verified, reconciled, and securely accounted for.
• Safeguard the hotel’s financial assets by maintaining strong controls over cash collections, deposits, petty cash, advances, and other monetary transactions.
• Prepare and coordinate daily bank deposits, ensuring all cash and cheque collections are deposited intact and within the required timelines.
• Manage petty cash and staff disbursements, ensuring all payments are properly authorized, supported, recorded, and reconciled.
• Maintain accurate daily cash records and reports, providing timely information for review by the Income Auditor, Finance Manager, and other relevant stakeholders.
• Manage and balance the General Cashier’s house bank, ensuring daily reconciliation and accountability at all times.
• Support robust financial controls by participating in surprise cash counts, investigations, reconciliations, and other internal control activities as required.
• Provide operational cash support to Front Office and Food & Beverage, including ensuring adequate availability of change, particularly during weekends, holidays, and peak periods.
• Ensure compliance with hotel policies, financial procedures, and applicable statutory requirements, including cash and foreign exchange controls.
• Maintain proper custody and records of unclaimed wages and other funds, ensuring they are securely held and accurately accounted for.
• Partner with operational teams to strengthen cash-handling practices, providing guidance and coaching on areas such as identifying counterfeit notes, verifying cheques and credit cards, and maintaining proper cash controls.
• Contribute to the development of the Finance team by supporting training, knowledge sharing, inventory exercises, and cross-functional activities.
• Demonstrate flexibility and teamwork, supporting other areas within Finance & Accounting and the wider hotel operation when required.
• Carry out other reasonable duties as assigned by the Finance Manager.

Qualifications

• Diploma or Certificate in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
• CPA qualification (at least Part I) or equivalent accounting qualification would be an added advantage.
• Minimum 2–3 years’ experience in a cash-handling or accounting role, preferably within a hotel or hospitality environment.
• Previous experience as a General Cashier, Cashier, Accounts Clerk, Income Auditor, or similar Finance role is preferred.
• Strong understanding of cash handling, reconciliation, banking, petty cash, and financial controls.
• Good numerical and analytical skills, with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, and experience using hotel/accounting systems would be an advantage.
• Demonstrated integrity, confidentiality, accountability, and trustworthiness, given the sensitive nature of the role.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with Front Office, Food & Beverage, and Finance teams.
• Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and maintain accuracy in a fast-paced luxury hospitality environment.
• Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and public holidays, in line with hotel operations.
