    Intern - Environment, Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion - Illeret

    WHY?

    • The general purpose of the CRS internship program is to provide learning opportunities to young Kenyan graduates while creating a pool of employable persons for both short- and long-term humanitarian aid and development-related careers.
    • The internship programme applies to graduates who have completed studies in the relevant field of study within the last two years and willing to commit to the program for six months.

    OBJECTIVE 

    The Intern - Environment, Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion will:

    • Acquire practical training and experience and develop career and life skills needed for 21st century workplace,
    • Participate in the creation of major impact on the Sustainable Development Goals and the National and County development goals,
    • Develop leadership skills by ingraining them with environmental sustainability principles to effectively participate in the running of WASH and Resilience Engineering infrastructure, systems and processes.

    HOW

    The intern will be part of the Nawiri Water, Sanitation, Hygiene and Environment team. Their main role is to support the County Departments of Water and Sanitation and Preventive Health (Public Health) in the provision of WASH services. The intern will support the implementation of Nawiri program activities with close supervision and guidance from the County Departments of Water and Sanitation and Preventive Health (Public Health) and the Nawiri program staff to foster learning and development by the end of the internship period.

    Clear internship objectives will be developed at the beginning of the internship period, assessed, and monitored on a regular basis, and final appraisal conducted at the end of the internship period to ensure that the intern achieves their learning and development objectives. 

    ROLE

    In close consultation with the Nawiri County WASH Lead, County Departments of Water and Sanitation and Preventive Health (Public Health), the Nawiri SC/Ward Coordinator and the Nawiri consortium partners, the Intern - Environment, Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion will learn while providing support to the implementation of planned WASHE activities. These will include:

    • Participation in Nawiri weekly activity planning.
    • Participate in team meetings including the WASHE CoP meetings as part of learnings.
    • Under the guidance of the Nawiri WASH lead, he/she will support in designing & planning, monitoring and control and operations and maintenance of water supply, water treatment, flood defense/control structures, systems and processes and other water-related projects.
    • In collaboration with Caritas and County Departments of Water and Sanitation and Preventive Health (Public Health), facilitate the participatory designs and planning, joint monitoring, developing of the infrastructure operations and maintenance plans, water safety plans, 
    • Participate and provide support during community level activities including household visits, community dialogues and public consultations among other activities as guided by the WASH officers.
    • Compile activity reports and field visit reports at end the of each activity using standard tools including putting together weekly progress reports.
    • Liaising with clients, contractors, government agencies, local authorities and suppliers to ensure effective and effective implementation of WASHE activities to comply with quality standards including SLI, CLA, EHS etc.
    • Maintaining professional relationships with project participants.
    • Any other activities assigned by the line manager.

    Required/Desired Foreign Language: English and Swahili

    Travel Required: 90% of the time to targeted sub-counties Northern Kenya Counties of Isiolo and Marsabit. 

    Key Working Relationships: 

    • Supervisory: None
    • Supervision: Reports to Senior Project Officer – WASH  
    • Internal: Nawiri WASH Lead, Nawiri Environmental Compliance Lead and the Marsabit County WASH Lead, Sub County Coordinators and Sub County WASH Project Officers.
    • External: Donor, Private sector actors including financial institutions, government agencies/officials, Local/international NGOs, and UN agencies operating in the project area.

    Basic Qualifications

    • Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering/Environmental Health/Public Health from Kenyan Universities/Reputable Colleges.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
    • Demonstrated ability to write good reports.
    • Proficiency in the use of computer modelling and monitoring applications.
    • Willingness to learn new things in a rapidly changing context.
    • Willingness to stay long days in remote field locations.
    • Graduates with demonstrated good character, creativity, honesty and integrity, positive attitude, and ability to learn.
